MiraCosta Online Ed Flex Workshop - Shared screen with speaker view
If you have questions, please enter them here in the chat. Jim and I will switch off fielding those inquires. If it is a highly individualized question, go head and privately chat to either of us and we will email you back with an answer.
I’m sorry, you might have already mentioned it but I don’t see the yes, no options…. I only see raise hand on my screen under the participants window
Erin, you may have an older version of Zoom - you might want to update the software at some point
Okay, that is very likely. Thank you
So quick question recap: the network demand is likely to hamper Zoom video, depending on the time & usage? So, is the directive to use video moderately, perhaps more for conferencing or brief presentations?
Yes, Jim! Thank you. I’m going to steal that “course and a half syndrome”term in meetings later today haha
Jose, that’s a good general recommendation, yes
Thank you for talking about streamlining the course for new users!
Yes- I think brief sessions feels like a good practice. There will be high traffic times but Zoom is adapting. I think this is a touch-and-go situation.
Hello Jim & Sean, I may attempt producing brief 5-7 minute videos on topics, please let us know the most accessible (easy) tools to prioritize for this intention. I also contemplated coming to the TIC but given the quarantine directive, I suspect we need to stay off campus as much as possible.
Zoom may be your best bet, Jose
The link to the workshops are also in the emails we have sent out.
I am planning to offer short videotaped lectures along with other materials for the week on the Announcements Page in Canvas. How do I tape myself speaking on the main ideas of the weekly chapter, using Zoom? (I not only need how to tape but how to post onto the Announcements Page for students to check out). Or perhaps I need to wait for specific workshops on Zoom?
Patricia - check out the zoom workshops tomorrow afternoon to learn about that
Patricia, that’s also something you could jump into the 1-1 support Sean’s talking about right now, anytime, to ask about
This is great….this definitely goes on in 3 hour art studio classes!
What is the link?
Where is the link, again? Thank you!
What subjects or skills are supported in NetTutor/STAR-CA?
Philip, within NetTutor, almost everything, honestly - you can check it out and see yourself
I”m so sorry I looked away for a moment - how do I find these Google docs?
what is the link for this section
the link is on the middle of the page
Lurker… hahahaha. Oh, Jim
How do I minimize this page so I can copy and paste these links on my laptop?
Am I correct that MCC students do not have their own individual Zoom accounts?
Sweet - thank you!!!
What are the advantages of making recordings with Zoom vs. Studio on Canvas?
Can I share a Zoom meeting with students who are not in one of my courses?
Are many others still having trouble getting a Zoom account? I have been waiting over one week and counting.
Yes- there is a delay right now. You are not alone
I tried to access my zoom confer account early on, and I couldn't get through.
I have and still do not have an account
When I put in a second request last Friday, I got my account in minutes.
It was shockingly great.
I know I have students who dont have internet/and or computers at home. Can I require attendace in Zoom sessions if I have students in that situation?
How does zoom compare to Canvas Conferences?
As a tutor for nursing students, do I need to be an instructor in a course in order to set up a tutoring session as a Zoom meeting?
Darlene, you don’t. You can set up a meeting and send the link out to whomever you want to participate.
Any recommendations on how to structure Zoom for office hours?
You can schedule sessions using Canvas Calendar.
I have a zoom account with SDSU. While I wait for a MCC account, can this help me in any way?
^^^ Office hours yes ^^^
Thanks for the reply regarding attendance, a follow-up, so they will have to get online access somehow. What if they don't? Then they will fail and have to be dropped, I assume?
Did you cover office hours online?
Darlene, yes, I think so, although I’m not certain because I don’t know for sure that the SDSU Zoom is open to anyone with a link - you’d want to test that. Even a free Zoom account could be useful in the interim.
Megan, I think that Instruction will come out with more detailed guidance on that. I think they will try very hard to not penalize students who aren’t able to make the transition.
What is alternative hosts, please?
how do you get your contacts into you zoom accout
Can they access zoom through all web browsers?
Thanks Jim and Sean!
Students sometimes have trouble with Firefox. Be sure to tell students this may be one of the issues they will experience.
Thank you for all the hard work you have put into compiling wonderful resources for us all. You are greatly appreciated.
Thanks Jim. I'll stay tuned. I have a few I know will likely fall in that category as they were already struggling to complete the online activities I had before this all came about.
Thanks so much to you both!!!!
Thank you, everyone! We will post the recording of this session by the end of the day. The next session is about to start - Canvas Basics with Liezl Madrona!
Thank you so much for this!!!
And just quickly, what again are the most common features of zoom?
I noticed most of my students using their phone devices, any concerns with mobile divices?
Thank you all
