All credit ESL?
What are the G courses?
The TLE is open access but does it still have prerequsites?
So with ESL 2A and 2AG students have 9 units of ESL in a single semester?
curious, is your ESL population larger for credit or non-credit
Have you had push back from counseling about the high unit value of your ESL sequence?
did you experience any problems registering students for 9 units of ESL per semester?
No problem at al. They were anxious.
Counseling has been our biggest proponent. Without them, we would not have been able to do this.
Does the CC system have a standard way for students to declare their intent to seek transfer?
What is TLC?
is it going to be possible for us to get this info by school, rather than just the state wide data? I need to address the "well our students are different" beliefs.
What is TLE one more time?
TLE = transfer level English
aka College Composition
transfer level Composition
The 95%: Is that students testing at ANY level of language proficiency (so, inclusive of testees into beginning, intermediate, advanced) who attempt transfer-level E, or is it students who have tested into transfer-level who then enter it and pass?
How can we figure out who is truly uninterested in transfer when they are encouraged to declare a major by Guided Pathways or to get Financial aid?
@Linda, we also support helping local replication of this research
Ellen--as a comment, I have lost count of the students "uninterested in transfer" who change their minds once they see what they can do.
@ellen.goldman administratively they are deemed to be interested if they check that box and declare a major, a students "true" intent is fluid and dynamic over time and can change within a term, so I advocate for robust intake and guidance so students understand the implications of major declaration but students as you know can and do change goals and majors more quickly than they can indicate such changes in the data systems, in the past, we have also looked at "behavioral intent" where students attempting certain classes such as transfer level math are deemed to have transfer intent (although that was not applied in this analysis)
Is the definition of “international student” mean they are on a F1 visa?
Ok. So “international student” = F1 visa + HS graduate in the foreign country?
How do you identify students that took ELD courses in HS? Students do not have the option to self-report on CCCApply that they took ELD courses.
But isn’t there the big caveat that the US HS grad data does not indicate whether the students had years of HS in another state?
@rlopez by matching HS to CC data in CalPASS, HS classes have a particular code in the K-12 CalPADS system that identifies the subject including ELD
now that colleges are offering ESL transfer-level English that articulates to CSU and UC, can we assume that more ELL students from high school who graduate will enter transfer-level ESL?
@Kathy correct, we only have CA data
@Eric we are assuming that will be the case and plan to track that
So caveat that these students could have years of HS in another state.
I believe about 6 colleges have TLEE (transfer level English equivalent) that is transferable
@Kathy yes, or another country
Several more TLEE are in the pipeline for F20 approval
And caveat that we don't know how much English they had prior to arriving to US high schools
FYI: Santa Rosa got CSU A2/IGETC 1A!
Can we get a list of which schools have an ESL course equivalent(transferable) to Eng Comp? And similarly those that have an ESL course used as a co-req for Eng Comp?
Good for SRJC!
Per PPIC, majority of Latino students in credit ESL are citizens, so this large chunk of students might not included in those graphs.
Kathy, do we have such a list or you have it off the top of your head?
Cypress is in the pipeline for TLEE
I believe the other colleges do not have the IGETC 1A; they only have CSU A2
It would make sense that a student who is enters and completes TLC based on measures that determine s/he can pass it can indeed do so. Without controlling for language proficiency of students entering and completing TLC, how can we be sure of what the data suggests?
TLEE with C2: American River, Sac City, Consumes, Folsom, Citrus, but some are not offering these.
