What if a student “Goes missing” in the class and does not do the paperwork to officially withdraw?

By “going missing” does that mean “inactive” in terms of their status on the People tab in Canvas?

This is actually quite common and it would be a major time issue in terms of reaching out to all such students.

Brad, DRE is closed but I do not believe they will accept a pass/fail grade. Have you heard anything about that?

Sorry— I just thought of a P/NP question. If a student chooses that, what grade becomes a P? A D or a C? Some English classes require a C in the prereq.

Faculty, those students using the Chromebook can access the basic Microsoft apps via their Office 365 account. This means you can still post .docx, .xlsx, etc. for students can use for your class. The students don't need to download Microsoft programs--they can just launch via the Internet and use in the cloud.

From my perspective I’ve actually noticed less drops (inactive) students at he beginning of the semester. My feeling is most of our students under 30 are very well versed with technology so it is not a major issue for them.

For our ice-breaker orientation discussion post, I asked students to share a meme about being in quarantine or like lyrics to some quanratined-themed song, or post some news article about something positive due to the quarantine (like nature flourishing). I feel like it's been a great way to add some humor and acknowledge the struggle collectively.

We also have some former students who are in their home countries and now they are able to continue studying ESL with LTCC.

I’ve been teaching Spanish for LTCC online for quite a few years and love it! I feel it’s a lot more personalized than face to face. Lean in on your peers. I’m sure you’ll do great!!!

Eric - we are not we not integrating Marco Polo with Canvas. We have a Department group on Marco Polo and we use it that for communication. For students, I provide extra credit if they decide to join my Intermediate Spanish group to practice speaking.

For wifi, I suggest either using wifi and then have data from your phone as a backup. Like open a hotspot to connect to your laptop.

Another thing I highly recommend is have your local Internet company go to your street and replace and update the wires that come into your house.

Many of these wires have not been replaced in years and sometimes rats eat the cables. This will improve your signal dramatically.

We processed a handful of staff tech today, here in the library. Jeff’s correct there are 70+ requests

Here in El Dorado Hills, sometimes there is no internet connection, so I record my lecture videos late at 1 AM or 6 AM when many people are not using internet in the area.

Brad, 10-15 mps seems like a good range.

Depending on what you are doing you may need to have your computer hard wired to an ethernet cable. My students have to upload videos and depending on where they are if they are not on a wired connection they have issues/

Many of them just don't get to the right place after clicking. They are using phones, tablets and computers so it's difficult to figure out where they're going wrong. Many are not very tech savvy.
