Jennifer you have been an amazing leader through all of this, so thank you for all you do and are doing.
Jim Sahlman
40:24
Jennifer—At what point do faculty get notified of such change? BEFORE it happens or AFTER it happens?
Angelica Guzman
41:33
Hi Jim. Faculty will be notified before the change occurs.
Jim Sahlman
41:57
Thank you.
Shelley Circle
44:43
If students petition for EW, does instructor of record need to sign off on this?
Ashley Kipple (she/her/hers)
45:32
To clarify, instructors can no longer issue EW's when submitting grades?
Jim Sahlman
47:16
What is the official position of the college when a faculty member has reached-out to students who are performing sub-par and these students give NO indication that COVID has impacted in a way that affect their success in the class. But then the student later petitions for an EW and then suddenly claims COVID as the reason. What happens then? Because it seems awfully disingenuous when the faculty member reached-out ahead of time and didn’t get that reason.
Chad Redwing
47:49
Correct, EW process is through student petition for a non-evaluative symbol.
Dale
49:27
Students need to request EW. Faculty can not give an EW in place of a D or an F. (True/False)
Bruce Anders
49:31
Do the W and EW factor differently in the Student Success calculus?
Angelica Guzman
51:03
Correct, students will request via petition.
Amy Duffy
51:13
We were previously encouraged to give an EW for anything below an A, B or C. Now am I hearing this is not the case, that it is initiated by the student?
Shelley Circle
52:04
That's right. It is no longer a grading option for us.
Angelica Guzman
52:09
W's count toward student progress and attempts.EW's does not count toward progress/attempts.
Bruce Anders
52:29
Thanks!
Cassandra Shoemate
52:58
On the student petition form for the EW, it says that the student needs to provide documentation. Is that still mandatory?
Chad Redwing
53:48
Faculty Options in the system this semester will be A, B, C, D, F, I or P/NP if student has filed for the option by deadline.

@Chad - FW is also an option as well correct?

Is the above the correct petition?

yes

55:22
@Chad will we have an option for FW as well for those students who stopped coming after the official drop date? I have 4 that stopped coming after I had to drop students. They said they would come so I did not drop them, and then they stopped coming.

It used to be that if the student was petitioning an Incomplete, and the work assigned was not completed by the due date the student would receive an IEW. Should it now be that if they don’t complete the work and it happens that they end up receiving an F should it be an IF?
Chad Redwing
56:17
Yes, for the first time this semester, board policy has changed and we will be able to give an FW, it's a new evaluative symbol.
Dr. Jennifer Zellet (she, her, hers)
56:24
@Jim re: reaching out to students -- It is greatly appreciated when faculty reach out to students, and it's the right thing to do. There could potentially be a host of reasons the student did not get back to that individual faculty, so we rely on the legalities of Title 5. At the end of the day, the student has to take the course again, so the opportunity for learning isn't lost. Thank you for the question.
Tina Giron
57:04
Student said her professor told her she couldn't receive a D grade. The course is a GE CSU Area C.2 and not a major required course. The student can receive a D, and can be used towards her degree. Can today's information be send to all faculty for clarification?
Chad Redwing
57:26
Yes, an Incomplete asks you to provide a grade that the I will revert to within a timeframe if the work is not done.
Nathan Bento
57:42
What is expiration date?
Dr. Jennifer Zellet (she, her, hers)
57:48
@Alicia - you can still give an I/EW as an option; however, it is your determination as faculty how to handle this situation.
Shelley Circle
57:53
What is advantage of moving to this new system??
Chad Redwing
58:01
within a year, set by instructor with student aware of the date.
Alicia Ocegueda

On the student petition form for the EW, it says that the student needs to provide documentation. Is that still mandatory?
Jim Sahlman
01:01:02
No they aren’t getting OUT of the class by having to retake it, but it violates equal protection for those students who were, frankly, honest about take the sub-par grade for sub-par work. How is that fair to other students?
Kevin Alavezos
01:02:17
(c) Regardless of whether the governing board elects to use plus and minus grading, it may provide for the use of the “FW” grade symbol to indicate that a student has both ceased participating in a course some time after the last day to officially withdraw from the course without having achieved a final passing grade, and that the student has not received district authorization to withdraw from the course under extenuating circumstances. The “FW” symbol may not be used if a student has qualified for and been granted military withdrawal. If “FW” is used, its grade point value shall be zero (0).
Lisa Schut
01:02:56
I don't think this question was answered yet: Do the W and EW factor differently in the Student Success calculus?
Alicia Ocegueda
01:02:58
Thank you Dr.Zellet and Angelica
Arianna Kennedy
01:05:37
Lisa, it was answered above. The EW does not count as an attempt at the course and a W does count as an attempt at the course :)
Lisa Schut
01:06:01
@Arianna Thank you.
Dr D M Preciado
01:06:28
What is the option for faculty who repeatedly reach out to students who have stopped coming to class and has not responded before the drop date? Must these students remain on the roster?
Nathan Bento
01:09:18
Who gets an F and who gets an FW? Clarify please.
Arianna Kennedy
01:11:51
Angelica or Jennifer, Can the faculty member utlize the permission to add after census form in regards to Dr. Preciado’s question :)
Tina Giron
01:12:42
@ Jim - Some students may not feel comfortable sharing their personal life, issues or lack of abilities(learning online due to Covid), as to their reasons of not attending. Education or contacting a Professor may not be their most highest priority at the moment to drop for non attending.
Coleen Patterson
01:14:53
So a student participates until Week 6. Then disappears. No response to emails. Can’t we drop them - say at week 11?
Linda Brzezinski
01:15:13
Yes. We can drop students.

It is important to drop students when they are not attending so they do not receive unearned financial aid funds.
Linda Brzezinski
01:16:28
We are not REQUIRED to drop them after census like we are required to before, but we are allowed.
Dianne Vargas
