Hello everyone. I'm new to the caucus meetings, and pleased to see the knowledge base. I'm wondering what the path for policy updates and "due out" that trickles down to the coordinators? for instance the JST credit transformation is on a timeline. Is this tracked who is making satisfactory progress in alignment with guidelines set out? thanks.

My college doesn't have a dedicated veterans educational counselor. Counselor is not consistent, due to the hierarchy of hiring procedure. Hours can be shifted as well as the counselor

@Tammara - I think you'll find that's the case at many, if not most, colleges across the state.

Abosutely concur with Nancy. I've had increased students and decrease in counselor hours. I'm down to 8 hours per week.

Thanks Doug. Yes, It's difficult and important to provide continuity from semester to semester with student needs. .

@Tammara we have the same challenge. Keeping counselors up to date on veteran ed policies is a challenge.

For example: Cypress College has 250 certified veterans but we have 900 total military affiliated students we serve

We also serve dependant of veterans. Some are using and other do not use benefits. Some are Cal Vet recipients

Veteran count is very important, working in a rural area, quite a few of the Veterans I talk to do not plan utilize VA benefits because the Housing rate is low - so they rather save the months for transfer when they move on to a university with a high housing rate payment.

Good point on providing services to dependents ...

@James, excellent point. And with the Promise program, our military affiliated students get far more bang for their buck saving that BAH/ed benefit for university

We need to think about moving away from serving veterans only to serving military affiliated students (AD, guard, reservists, dependents, and veterans)

Its started with you administration and the support you have for your programs. Can you come up with processes to accurately track the numbers of Veterans and military affiliated students. Also, are you actually doing work to support everyone.

Maybe an MOU with VA/CalVET to setup an automatic verification of Veteran Status submitted through CCCApply?

At Cypress I work with institutional research to identify all military affiliated students and then we connect with them and inform them of the services we provide.

I completely agree with Mr. Avegalio

yes, we do the same. IF students self identify. But, like someone else mentioned, there are glitches. Forinstance, definitions of the catagories probably need to be stated.

I think each college can work with Admission and Records with their supplemental form to better track this information and be clear with the messaging about being a Veteran and also military affiliated. Working with research at your colleges is important also. So it is up to the college to really work on these.

It occurs to me that perhaps CCCCO can leverage "TroopID" with CCCApply or for all colleges so that we have correct veterans status at admissions.

CSU Sacramento provides focused professional development for their dedicated veterans counselors and then a Veterans-friendly 'certification' for any interested faculty.

Is Sharon Quirk Silva serving on the Assm Veterans Cmt ?? … Has she introduced any bills, or looking at introducing?On Legislative visits … is there a way to meet with other Legislators (Asm / Sen)? Targeting several who would need/like to have additional info on VRCs?

Hi Folks, I am the new Dean of Counseling at MJC and I would like to see this group have a best practice work group on how we support our Veterans and the intersection of Academic counseling, disability services ,psychological counseling and basic needs .

Palomar is a great example and good to build off of. It is going to be interesting to see how each college does this important work as it will be different for everyone.

The next big hurdle is to get the CSUs on board. UC will be a completely different story.

Cal Vet has not been much help agree...

There is discussion to have the next in person Veterans Symposium in Sacramento again. A great way to tie in advocacy at the Capital.
