What's new in Spanish OER? - Shared screen with speaker view
Who can see your viewing activity?
Would the slide deck be shared too?
Yes, we will post the slide deck on our website: https://asccc-oeri.org/webinars-and-events/
Great. Thank you!
As an associate faculty at Miracosta I have to say that Pluma made us the happiest instructors! Students finally get engaged learning Spanish! and for us is super friendly to use. 100% better than any text-book
Thank you, Laura. I want to use a few chapters in my class this semester.
@Pilar--do you have a placement examination at your college?
Can you add the google link in the chat?
@Pilar--how long did it take you to complete this projecdt?
You can find the Spanish OERI page here: https://asccc-oeri.org/open-educational-resources-and-spanish/
What’s the link for the first OER book?
(That also has the link to the google folder, with examples of schedules, how to use the materials, learning objectives and assessment, etc.)
can I ask a questio about the videos..???
@Pilar: Did you create the videos?
Does each semester of Pluma follow the California C-ID Spanish descriptors?
You can include a link to YouTube videos, as long as you have enough description and everything without the video being completely necessary.
Some videos are OER. TED talks are usually CC-BY-ND.
thank you, Pilar and Jenny
Wonderful resources both!
Thank you to you both for sharing your incredible creations!
We are starting OER in Spanish 1 with 2 instructors and I will begin in Fall 2022
Now you tell me that, Cristina!!! I had to switch to an OER and it's just way too much work!
the issue is homework!
Excellent! the issue is that many OER don't have homework...
What's your email?
Thank you, Cristina!!!! and Pilar and Jenny.
Does Pluma include “homework”? Practice activities?
Thank you, Cristina. I have to leave now. See you later.
Yes. Pluma has homework. It’s not labeled as “homework” but there are many formative assessments and it is purposely simple to allow faculty to add what they want instead of feeling pressure to get through piles of activities.
When I was looking for learning objectives examples w/ DEI components, I had trouble finding things. Here is a resources that might be useful for some: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jUnnq6lcby6hmNOfC9SQihUGhqztzT9-zZGOOZWbbq0/edit?usp=sharinghttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1jUnnq6lcby6hmNOfC9SQihUGhqztzT9-zZGOOZWbbq0/edit?usp=sharing
@Pilar, mil gracias.
Jenny, the doc asks for Request access
Great comment Jenny!
Jenny, has anyone outside of Oregon adapted your OER to your knowledge?
Yes, thank you!!
Same, Pilar. No busywork, but assignments so students bring their own knowledge and info to class.
Pilar, what do you use for SPAN 001 since Plumas starts with Novice high learners (I think that is what I understood)?
I love that homework philosophy
Did your college support you to create OER materials? If so, how did they support you? How did you find time to write a book?
I got a grant through my university’s library. It paid about $6000 for summer work over two years, plus it paid for copyediting for a pretty version.
My department was 100% supportive and the work to create PLUMA got started thanks to a sabbatical and small grants from the Open Educational Resources Adoption Incentive Program and the MiraCosta College Innovations Grant Program. Our College uses PLUMA in all of our first three semesters of Spanish courses.
It does not compensate for all the time.
Agreed. Minimal compensation. Labor of love.
Ok, thanks for the clarification.
Thank you all!
¡gracias! Will be there at 10:30
Thank you so much for this very informative session!
