01:43:23
I am SO SORRY to everyone. Thank you to the host for muting me. I am attempting to balance this another meeting. I am SOOO sorry for not muting or monitoring the chat. Thank you to those kindly asking me to mute. Again SO SORRY.

01:47:27
Also Bess Williamson's book "Accessible America: A History of Disability and Design" is a great overview of the west coast and across of the 70s movement.

01:48:19
The book is part of the Crip Camp Series

01:48:54
great! Thanks!

01:54:17
Lyft and Uber are still discriminating against person(s) with service animals.

02:07:15
unfortunately, the accessibility statement is not all that tangible and everyone interprets it their own way, based on their, oftentimes limited, experience and understanding. Most colleges want to provide the bare minimum.

02:10:29
Edina, I completely agree. Colleges are litigiously averse and work to the minimum standards precisely because of the financial costs. I find this to be the general approach of CCCs in all areas, including in hiring to the bare MQs. More attention and RESOURCES need to be directed to serve DSPS across the state.

02:11:52
why is it so difficult for campuses to have educational material, websites, etc.. accessible for all students?

02:12:01
Agreed. More attention, more resources, and much more EDUCATION. Needs are so varied and only so much ignorance can be excused if they’re refusing to listen to those that have the answers for accessibility equality

02:13:22
Alina, I think sometimes because there is no ne who oversees what is accessible so departments and programs just go ahead and purchase things what they like

02:13:35
Should be tested with a screen reader.

02:13:41
If all of the entities are on the same page for standards...implementation should be modeled by practices so why especially at this time that the CCCC does not practice the standards across all areas in a way that allows individual districts / campuses to practice and "oh well we can retrofit." So how do we help make our procedures and actions to match for consistent foundation for inclusive engagement at all levels, all classes/services, and community.

02:13:54
It is hard to have Educational material accessible because the people who make it do not have accessibility at the fore front when they first design the product. it it done after the product is made.

02:13:56
Pearson openly acknowledges that they don't build for accessibility

02:14:09
Should be tested against all WCAG 2.0 Level AA success criteria

02:14:14
also, I found that even when a product passes VPAT, it might not be easily accessible for students with certain disabilities

02:15:16
all great points for us to consider on an ongoing basis. This is a process and changes bases on the needs of our students, and now due to the current situation.

02:16:40
MyLife Lab, chromebooks, easy fixes...makes it hard when we purchase used and then go what? the procurement and tech support need to not be bypass at the beginning of a plan or design.

02:17:02
Lyn, exactly

02:17:53
all colleges should have an accessible procurement process

02:18:24
Do you have wording for such, Edina?

02:18:37
Absolutely Edina -

02:18:41
I am working on it - I found some great examples

02:18:43
I will share

02:18:57
thank you

02:19:14
Please share with everyone.. :)

02:20:01
Please share thank you Edina - this is a great practice to collaborate and sharing vital information and procedures

02:20:34
ccc tech center and ccc accessibility websites has great resources and samples that can be used...also June 5 & 6 the CCC tech and accessibility workshops will be going on again with rescoruces, practices and a lot of dialog.

02:21:07
The Chancellor's Office has the Accessibility Standards Work Group who is putting together training modules on these topics. They will be on the Vision Resource Center.

02:21:17
CCC tech and accessibility … with regards to procurement and guidelines.

02:23:21
Great suggestion - Dean of Educational Technology - does any campus have a Dean of Educational Technology?

02:23:34
I wish :)

02:23:58
I am fighting for an Accessibility Coordinator

02:24:23
A VPAT or ACR provides very limited information. If a vendor reports a product Supports all or most of the criteria, but does not provide meaningful information as Remarks and Explanations, it is very difficult to use the VPAT or ACR to determine how accessible a product is or is not. If a procurement process is at the stage where it takes the VPAT or ACR information at face value, what a vendor reports in the Remarks and Explanations is crucial. It is also important that the vendor clearly explain the process used to evaluate the product. If the accessibility of the product only applies to an iPad, for example, and the product is going to be used on college lab desktop computers, is the VPAT or ACR useful?

02:24:23
Wishing you the best Edina

02:24:33
I've been trying to get a Director of Accessible Technology for about 3 years, unsuccessfully.

02:25:08
Can't get my VP to push it forward.

02:25:33
Nicolas, I agree, but most colleges do not ask those questions

02:26:06
Maybe You can use the case to justify your request!!!

02:26:17
I've tried.

02:27:55
Could it be a requirement from the chancellor's office?

02:28:27
Either a director of dean, depending on school size?

02:28:50
Please note, Audio Description is a requirement for WCAG 2.0 and 2.1.

02:29:10
Edina, we have an accessibility checklist for purchasing technology that will soon be in an Administrative Procedure for purchasing said technology. Nathaniel, that would be awesome.

02:29:14
WCAG 2.1 provides 17 additional success criteria to address: mobile accessibility, people with low vision, people with cognitive and learning disabilities.

02:29:19
https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/new-in-21/

02:29:39
Grace, yes, that is what I am working on also

02:30:49
Grace, would you be willing to share your checklist?

02:31:43
Yes, I'd be interested as well,, Grace. danita.scott@deltacollege.edu

02:32:11
Stephanie, Danita, sure. I can send it via the Director's Listserv.

02:32:25
Thanks, Grace.

02:32:26
Great! Thank you Grace!

02:32:48
That would be great, Grace! Thank you, in advance!

02:35:04
Thank you!

02:36:14
Wording in policy and procedures in our institutions … it has be urged to remember to mindful participate and utilize to keep them active as needed...local academic senates as well as statewide are entities that allow for inclusive language and benchmark wording that is clear and modern as things change.

02:37:33
Southwestern College was able to hire an classified position in response to a 508 complaint. It is housed in Institutional Technology department and the focus in on Accessibility of Information Technology. All new tech purchases are evaluated for accessibility. Contact me if you would like the job description mflood@swccd.edu

02:38:32
Thanks Malia

02:38:53
yes thank you Malia

02:41:08
I'll be contacting you Malia. Thanks.

02:42:40
For those looking for sample job descriptions, I have collected different examples at the CCC Accessibility Center website: https://cccaccessibility.org/campus-plan/staffing

02:43:01
what is MOOC's

02:43:03
Thanks...Sean

02:43:14
Massive Open Online Courses?

02:43:18
Massively Open Online Course = MOOC

02:43:25
thank you

02:43:56
Thank you Sean

02:43:59
do we need to worry about copyright issues when copyrighting?

02:44:32
Question: Many faculty use publisher materials (like Pearson PPT) in their Canvas course shell that are not accessible. Faculty insist they are not responsible for accessibility on this content. When you then ask them to use content that is accessible, they claim it's a violation of Academic Freedom. How do you recommend addressing this issue?

02:45:12
^^^^ Yes!

02:45:49
there's your answer Ghada

02:45:52
Thanks for the shout out Paul!

02:45:54
do we need to worry about copyright issues when captioning***?

02:46:07
Academic Freedom is separate from accessibility of their conent.

02:46:27
Yes Gary!!!

02:46:56
Nice try!

02:47:06
Gary, how do you convince them of that? :)

02:47:10
But it's a complete separate issue.

02:47:20
Classes offer synchronous instruction; does it have to be captioned in real-time?

02:47:29
federal regulations trump academic freedom

02:47:30
They have total freedom of content, but not the accessibility of the vessel that content is delivered in

02:47:32
Academic Freedom does not trump Title II of the ADA.

02:48:03
ask Paul - I'm sure it does

02:48:31
Will we have access to the power points and recordings

02:48:33
I’m asked frequently about auto captions, such as those on YouTube, which are imperfect. What is the standard on auto generated content?

02:48:58
After the fact (i.e., recorded videos) need to be 100% correct

02:49:02
For those persons that have offered to share materials, DSPS Solutions has asked for them to share with us and we will post them as soon as we are able.

02:49:02
They should be able to edit the captions that are auto generated in YouTube

02:49:05
How can I get the slides?

02:49:43
Hello Amar, the guidance for classes that are synchronous instruction are that they do not have to be live captioned unless there is a request from a student. The live captions apply to one-way webcast type content.

02:49:49
They can do that. They can edit the captioning in YouTube.

02:49:54
Correct. They can.

02:50:16
they should do that - they need to be reminded of that

02:50:22
Please also post slide deck to LD listserv

02:50:25
Yes - what Paul said. Auto-captions are not sufficient at this time.

02:50:29
if you can post it to the alt media listserv, that would be appreciated!

02:50:33
Question - a faculty member has been using 3CMEdia for captions, but is having issues with technical words being incorrect. Any suggestions? She says it takes hours to correct them herself.

02:50:41
I've told Faculty they need to review their YouTube video content FIRST to check the quality of the captioning BEFORE they post and use this in their classes.

02:51:01
please send to DSPS solutions

02:51:03
Me too Gary.

02:51:05
yes, and you need to do that repeatedly, Gary - my experience

02:51:17
Yes, science class

02:51:19
Provide a list of terms

02:51:27
Can 3CM assign a captionist with a dictionary for that topic?

02:51:27
Could provide technical terms before send for captioning

02:51:50
Yeap.

02:52:00
I had a question about that court order for LACC to make PeopleSoft accessible. It sounds like a great idea, but a lot of these publisher portals are closed, proprietary systems, and it isn't even possible for us to reprogram them. I guess I'm wondering why we can't have more accountability for the publishers who actually created the inaccessible content rather than only the college.

02:52:42
Otter.ai is currently offering a free license for campuses, they offer auto generating captions and they tend to be more accurate as the faculty trains the auto-generation. It doesn't eliminate the need to go back in and edit the errors, but it is one of the better ones out there and it can be integrated into Zoom.

02:52:45
Jacob, you might want to consider this model:

02:52:48
ProctorioDated July 31, 20191. ADA / Accessibility. With respect to ADA compliance, the vendor shall have the following capabilities.a) Conform to section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (http://www.section508.gov/section-508- standards-guide) and WCAG 2.0, Level AA (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/) specifications.b) Comply with all applicable FCC regulations regarding advanced communications services (http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/advanced-communications-services-acs).c) Provide support for multi-modal advanced communications services to facilitate communications between individuals using digital text, audio, and video.d) Resolve immediately any accessibility issues that are discovered or encountered by end users, and communicate a concrete timeframe for resolving the issue(s).e) On an annual basis, provide an updated VPAT.f) Supplier commits to third party review of accessibility from providers listed in this Exhibit demonstrating compliance with Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 AA standards, within 12- months

02:53:08
of contract execution.2. Accessibility Clause. Supplier warrants that their software, products and services adhere to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and is fully compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, Level AA (WCAG 2.0, AA) standards for accessibility. Credible verification and/or documentation regarding the accessibility of the software, product, or service will be provided by the Supplier upon request. If portions of the software or user experience are discovered to be non- compliant at any point, the Foundation (on behalf of the Chancellor’s Office or other colleges/agencies participating under this agreement) will notify Supplier immediately. If any student accommodation is found to be necessary due to an identifiable lack of accessibility in the Supplier software, the cost for accommodation will be paid by Supplier upon request by the Foundation, once verified that the student accommodation conforms with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and that the non

02:53:26
compliance did not arise from intermediary interference (e.g., virus protection software, web browser problems, or out of date assistive technology) or a student’s inability to properly utilize compliant assistive technology. If necessary, an independent and mutually agreed upon, 3rd party accessibility firm may be used to validate the lack of software accessibility. Reasonability of cost for accommodation will be upon mutual agreement by Supplier and the Foundation.

02:53:30
Is anyone using otter.ai with Zoom?

02:54:18
Hey Nathaniel, Long Beach City College is currently piloting Otter.ai

02:54:25
Nathaniel, not for DHH students

02:54:42
Thank you

02:54:48
we use captioner or interpreter for any Zoom meetings for DHH students to ensure accuracy

02:55:29
when classes go back to being in person, and students with immune problems are not able to return, will colleges still need to provide online options as an accommodation?

02:55:36
We should create a thread to discuss success and challenge/limitations of Otter in Zoom - from what I've seen in Otter, I've been impressed

02:56:00
Zoom also provides transcripts

02:56:27
Yes, but is the chancellors office continuing the transcripts in all CCC Confer sessions after summer?

02:56:53
Kathy, That's a great question. It will be interesting how colleges argue that a class is not suitable in an online format when the class has already been offered "successfully" in an online format.

02:57:00
Nathaniel I like your idea, I have had some conversations with their tech support, so I can definitely share that information.

02:57:02
go for it, Nathaniel - I really like those discussions. It helps me decide if we should go with a product. Real experiences are better than VPAT

02:57:52
Please mute!

02:58:13
MyMathLab has had inaccessible issues for a very long time, and I know AHEAD quite a few years ago had created an adhoc advocacy group (hosted by Univ Of Wash DO-IT program) to put pressure and accountabilty for the publishers. What is the status of this advocacy group?

02:58:34
Paul - Can you please let us know if there have been any legal suits regarding COVID 19 and disability?

02:58:53
any thoughts on Proctorio and alternatives?

02:59:05
Linda, it sounds like someone is washing dishes. Please ask them to mute.

02:59:19
Holly, please mute

02:59:42
More and more faculty are providing all students in their course more time on exams to address both disability and equity needs in remote transition. Under these cases, if extra time is being given as a universal design, are students still entitled to extra time?

03:00:16
Bernadette, the short answer is YES

03:00:34
I think it will take colleges/universities to discontinue their use of MyMath and other "My" products for Pearson to catch a clue and make their products accessible.

03:00:37
Are those times PST?

03:00:52
Paul - Can you please let us know if there have been any legal suits regarding COVID 19 and disability?

03:00:55
Thank you.

Stormy, please mute

03:02:25
Can the host please mute all

03:02:50
