Thanks to all of our @ONE team. I couldn’t see all the participants to see everyone who joined for a shout out!
Lisa Beach
28:18
Are all STAC purchases for district-wide contracts only?
Jory Hadsell
28:46
@Lisa - STAC purchases can be made on an individual college basis if desired.
Jory Hadsell
30:49
Purchases can be made for college-wide FTE or generally for a sub-set (e.g., certain population of students) based on a smaller FTE count, if the technology integration (e.g. Canvas) supports use for a sub-population.
Tracie Bosket
31:17
is Vericite part of TurnItIn now?
Andrea Hanstein
31:37
@Tracie, yes. They were purchased by them two years ago I believe. Maybe even longer.
Anna Stirling
31:45
Yes, Vericite was purchased by Turnitin
Jory Hadsell
31:56
@Tracie, yes, Turnitin purchased Vericite a year or two ago
Kathy Schultz
31:57
What if we already signed a contract for Turnitin SimCheck in the Spring. Will we get a discount off what we paid already?
Rick Robison
32:04
If we already have a relationship and deposit account set up with NetTutor, do we need to order via STAC?
Anna Stirling
32:29
Vericite was purchased in early 2018: https://www.edsurge.com/news/2018-02-20-turnitin-acquires-plagiarism-detection-competitor-vericite#:~:text=Feb%2020%2C%202018&text=VERICITE%2C%20a%20developer%20of%20a,staff%20will%20join%20the%20Turnitin.
Tracie Bosket
32:38
Ah, thanks All. I was not aware about that. That is great to hear
Jim Julius
33:39
It’s great that this is resulting in lower prices but the process is challenging in terms of timing and sustainability/budgeting!
Jory Hadsell
33:41
@Rick - we’re going to double check on that one. I don’t think so, but want to make sure you get the right answer.
Jodie Steeley
33:43
Can you repeat the info about Proctorio? 6 month contract?
Kandace Knudson
35:17
If colleges want one of these services in mid-Spring, they pay the foundation-negotiated price? (Not the lower price)?
Jory Hadsell
36:03
@Kandace correct. Purchases for spring outside the current buying window (Dec 4) come in at the pre-negotiated Foundation price.
Jodie Steeley
36:08
Who is the contact for Proctorio about segmenting FTES for only a couple of departments? The tool would need to be installed in Canvas differently than it currently is. It's available to all faculty currently in our account. If it remains open, we could expect a bill at the end of the contract. Who monitors usage? I'm thinking about a dashboard like NET-TUTOR has. Proctorio wasn't able to tell us who was using the service before. Is here a dashboard now?
Jory Hadsell
36:15
@Jodie, we’ll ask that question live re: Proctorio
Maritez Apigo
42:49
So for Proctorio, we need to order/pay for the FTE for the full campus even if only a few departments are using it?
Maritez Apigo
44:07
Thank you for clarifying that!
Rick Robison
44:23
We had about 3,250 students use Proctorio in Fall 2020, but total FTES is around 7,800. So, we should order for 3,500 x $7.75?
fabiola torres
44:36
We are using Pronto for DETCHE. YAY
Katie Datko
44:48
Yeas
fabiola torres
44:53
PRONTO part of STAC list
Katie Datko
45:06
Yes, sorry... Please jump onto Pronto and say hi!
Jodie Steeley
46:18
@Rick How would you limit usage in Canvas? Colleges will need to find a way to block use correct? Otherwise I think Proctorio would give us a bill at the end of the semester for the number of real users we had beyond our estimate.
Tracie Bosket
47:39
@Katie Are you using MS Teams? If so, do you use Teams and Pronto for groups and chats?
Anna Stirling
48:09
@Jodie; you could try and set up specific sections in a subaccount and only allow Proctorio in the subaccount. It would probably be a lot of work for managing the creation of those sections and/or moving them into the subaccount.
Justin Schultz
49:33
@Kathy - I will connect with you offline and we can discuss the previous contract you secured
Jodie Steeley
50:23
@Anna...It would be a lot of work. That is the only solution I could see since Proctorio hasn't developed a dashboard. It seems the only data they have is price and number of users. Here's another question...if FCC has a student who is also attending MSJC and we BOTH pay $7.75 for that student, the system is paying MORE than the published price of $15 per ftes. Does that sound right?
Katie Datko
51:10
Auditor report mentioned by Kandace https://www.auditor.ca.gov/reports/2017-102/responses.html
Anna Stirling
51:17
@Jodie - Possibly; I'd have to review the agreement to understand the counting.
Carol Impara
52:34
What was the last point?
Katie Datko
52:43
@Tracie. We have Teams. It hasn’t been used widely. Pronto was adopted really quickly once we went remote. We went from 200 or so total users to over half the campus in under 2 months.
Tracie Bosket
56:46
@Katie We just got Teams, but cannot add the students. For now only the staff has access to it
Jodie Steeley
59:01
What is that number Laurie? The number for AR & BP ?
Katie Datko
59:08
@Tracie, our Teams is across all constituents. We love Pronto because faculty can opt in to it. All students are loaded from Canvas. It’s been great!
Laurie Vasquez
59:58
The Community College League of California has issued updated board policy and administrative procedure guidance for technology accessibility. 01:01:00
Yes, for instance, this is an equity issue as well. Could equity funding be used to help?
Katie Datko
01:01:03
My pleasure! @Tracie! We were so lucky to have Fabiola Torres as an advocate on campus. Made the transition so easy!
Autumn Bell
01:01:41
Great presentation!
Kandace Knudson
01:01:46
Thanks, Laurie
Jodie Steeley
01:01:52
@Laurie. Oh..I see..so it's a recommendation to modify ICC BP/AR's? Generally that regulation noted physical equipment, like phones (telecommunications). Are you saying that we could add digital tools and software to the ICC regulation?
Jasmine Phillips
01:01:57
great slides, will they be shared? :)
Jodie Steeley
01:02:37
@Laurie...any chance you have a link?
Katie Datko
01:03:31

01:19:00
I think it is important to understand that Canvas is not optional to providing instruction. All of the other tools can be considered optional. Can we agree to make that distinction?
Helen Graves
01:19:16
Agreed, Anna.
Suzanne Wakim
01:19:33
@Anna - 100% agree

01:19:36

Will we have Zoom funded beyond June 2021?
Maritez Apigo
01:20:31
How do we gain access to the cloud storage?
Scott Vigallon
01:20:35
@Barney: How long will those videos remain stored in the cloud?
Curtis Williams
01:21:07
What is the long-term video storage solution apart from the Zoom cloud?
CCC DECO
01:22:09
Perhaps he is referring to 3CMedia. We will verify.
Najib Manea
01:23:40
Will we have Blackboard Ally funded beyond June 2021?
Jodie Steeley
01:24:18
I hear that we are supporting "equity" across the system...how does a tool do that...specifically? Not rhetorical, instead, looking for details rather than a general statement.
M. Liko Puha
01:28:25
Yes! EVC Marty Alvarado. It will be similar to building access maintenance. These programs are essential and should not be viewed as extra--but standard instructional operating tools..

01:58:28
@Julie From what I remember Proctorio publicly released student chat. Did ProctorioU (name?) do that too?
Julie Von Bergen
01:59:29
I’m not sure of all the details related to the proctoring companies, but the articles linked in my slides have more details
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
01:59:46
I would like to encourage everyone to consider *asynchronous* voice and video tools too (like VoiceThread and Flipgrid) when evaluating when cameras are essential in instruction. From your view (wherever that may be) is that occurring?
Nick DeMello

02:02:49
Great job, thanks Nick!
Jodie Steeley
02:03:03
Is surveillance software the only way to confirm a students identity Nick?
Julie Von Bergen
02:03:09
Thanks Nick! I appreciate your point about authentication.
Nick DeMello
02:03:56
We watch students take exams in person, I consider that more verification than surveillance.
Del Helms
02:06:47
@Nick Do you check Student IDs when you take roll on the first day of class? Do students need to show their ID when taking exams in f2f classes?
Nick DeMello
02:07:06
No, but I do at the final exam (in face to face).
Jodie Steeley
02:07:07
@Nick. Of course in person exams are. I meant...is surveillance software the only way to verify student identity in an online course?
Nick DeMello
02:07:49
I don’t know of another way to verify the ID of the person taking the exam, other that to watch them take the exam. Time shifted or IRL.
Del Helms
02:07:52
@nick... how is the final exam weighted?
Jodie Steeley
02:07:53
@Nick "Watching" and "Recording" are not the same.
Nick DeMello
02:08:55
By recording I give students the flexibility to let me watch it, but do it on their own schedule. Take the exam where they want, when they want, and “send” me the images to watch afterwards. It’s a service that allows more students to take an essential classs.
Sandra Hutchinson
02:10:26
@Nick. Thank you for articulating the importance of validation of academic rigor of online courses with proctoring software and how flagging in Proctorio is not auto-scoring. Proctorio can be used as an extra pair of eyes like a TA
Nick DeMello
02:10:29
A grade is part reward and part measurement. I have weekly quizzes, monthly mini-midterms and a single final. Together those measures award about half the points. The other half are adaptive homework assignments, lab reports (kitchen safe chemistry) and discussions group participation. Which takes the edge of stick exam grading.
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
02:10:37
Jennifer, thank you for demonstrating how changing *how* we assess learning can be transformative for so many ways.
Jodie Steeley
02:10:43
That sounds like a good alternative Nick. Students should be able to opt out. Thank you for sharing. With all of these ideas, I hope we examine "why" students chose to cheat and find ways that they can proudly demonstrate what they have learned.
Tracy Schaelen
02:10:58
Thanks so much for this, Jen! I appreciate the nod to learning happening DURING assessment. That is truly making the most of students' time.
Jennifer Kienzle
02:11:08
Thanks Michelle!
CCC DECO
02:11:19
Thank you, Jen! Great contribution to the body of knowledge.
Del Helms
02:11:51
Back in 2000 our CC required proctored final exams for online courses. The issue was the final exams needed to be weighted in such a way that if someone else was doing the work throughout the semester, the final exam would have to be weighted to ensure students who were not doing the work prior to the final exam couldn't pass the course with a failing final exam score... We abandoned the required proctored final exam because of this challenge.
Anna Stirling
02:11:53
Great presentation Jennifer! Such a better way to look at the learning process.
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
02:11:55
If anyone is interested, there was a Teach-In Against Surveillance event earlier today in support of raising funds for an educator that Proctorio is currently suing. Here is a link to the archive. I only caught part of it but it was extremely powerful. http://againstsurveillance.net/
