If we reuse this material, do we need to cite the source of OER?
Flavia Belpoliti
01:18:28
@Carlo, it will depend on the OER license, you need to do it if it asks for 'attribution'
Michelle Pilati
01:18:30
All of the standard Creative Commons license indicate that, at a minimum, you indicate your source.
Sara Casler
01:18:37
These are all the reasons I’ve listed in the past.
Carlo Stresino
01:20:01
ok. thx! Is it on each page or can it be on the homepage of the course?
Michelle Pilati
01:21:34
@Carlo - If you build in Libre, it is very easy to indicate your source on every page. If you are revising an existing text, it will automatically indicate your source - but you can also add in other sources. Those other sources are usually then recognize at the end of the page/section.
Carlo Stresino
01:22:01
I'm working with Canvas LMS
Carlo Stresino
01:22:11
I will be moving html to Canvas.
Michelle Pilati
01:23:05
One of the very awesome things is that you can develop in Libre - and then import it into Canvas. This makes it so you can make your text available outside of class/Canvas - AND makes printing easy. Canvas does not give you that power.
Adrienne Merlo
01:24:05
@Michelle, very nice.
Carlo Stresino
01:24:10
I can easily post a source on each page as well. It is not a problem. I just want to make sure that I'm citing the source.
Irena Stefanova
01:28:16
What time is this informational webinar over?
Luz Miranda Valencia
01:28:29
Will we receive the recording or this webinar? Thank you
Cristina Moon
01:28:32
Until 1:30 pm
Michelle Pilati
01:28:44
Carlo - that’s great. We’re very focused on trying to get away from some of the things that often happen with OER - like not having the text until you have access to the course - and then losing access after the class is over. If you import into Canvas, each chapter becomes a Module - each page becomes a page. And being able to print is so handy - for me as an instructor, I can do old-fashioned things - like printing out a chapter when I am building out assessments and such. While I can print from Canvas, that’s page by page - from Libre, I can print the whole book, a chapter, or a page - or I can download as a PDF (great for searching).
Michelle Pilati
01:29:22
Recording will be available on our website - asccc-oeri.org - and we’ll let you know when it is available.

If you are needing an account, send a note just now to jrogers@libretexts.org - be sure to use your college account. And if you want to be in a library other than Humanities, let her - Jennifer know.
Begoña Cirera
01:42:46
@Michelle, can I do that too? I was put in the wrong library. So, I don’t have access to the library I need…. I also have forgotten my password (to enter the wrong library)
Michelle Pilati
01:43:30
Yes - accounts are specific to a library - so you would need a different account to be in a different library.
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
01:45:10
@Michelle - The account is only if you want to edit or remix the material, right? Because I have access to the materials in all libraries (to view), but am currently only able to edit material in Humanities.
Michelle Pilati
01:46:04
Anyone can see things everywhere. If you build or do something, you will need to work in “your” library. Denise - you are spot-on.
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
01:47:41
@Michelle - thanks.

What about Fair Use?
Michelle Pilati
02:10:17
You can absolutely use a LibreTexts without doing anything. I was doing that for a while - then I finally re-ordered it. And now I am actually changing content. You can ease into it.
B. Franchesca Amezola
02:10:50
Thank you all! New to OER. :)
Michelle Pilati
02:11:21
“Fair use” is often misused and overused - it is to be avoided.
Stacy Jazán
02:11:50
$500 per campus for any subject matter?
Michelle Pilati
02:12:17
It’s all a lot easier than it looks. Really. When you are working on something it is very similar to any other editor.
Carlo Stresino
02:12:22
I respectfully disagree. If you follow the Fair Use Guidelines, it is legal and fair to use for Educators.
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:14:20
Just wrote to Jennifer and she fixed my account issue— I’m logged in now as an instructor (black bar- yay!). ¡Gracias, Jennifer! :)
Michelle Pilati
02:15:34
Carlo - there are many times that people do things that they should not do. We encounter this all the time. There are things faculty do the in the privacy of a classroom or Canvas that would be problematic if done in a more public forum. Fair Use abuse is quite common - but that does not mean that there is not appropriate use of Fair Use. That’s all. Fair Use does not make something into OER - and we’re trying to advocate for OER and all the freedom if gives you.
Roberto Hurtado
02:15:56
can you add more chapters?
Michelle Pilati
02:16:13
Oy - Zoom needs a spell-check… (or I do)

Modules and Pages...
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:17:26
Is it dynamic? Like, if you create a book, can you hold off including certain chapters/sections, and then, when you do, “refresh” to bring new material into Canvas?
Begoña Cirera
02:17:57
Improvement. He didn’t say Algebra. :-)
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:18:08
Or, if you make corrections/changes, will the changes show up in Canvas (or whatever LMS you’re using)?
Carlo Stresino
02:18:29
@Michelle Thanks!
Michelle Pilati
02:18:40
What I’ve done is imported everything into Canvas - and then not published the pages that are not ready - in Libre and in Canvas - and then just publish them. Yes, changes are imported dynamically. It’s great - especially if your book is multiple Canvas courses.
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:18:48
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature ;)
Sara Pierce (she, her, ella)
02:18:53

Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:19:31
@Michelle - Great!
Cristina Moon
02:19:34
Just drag an drop. Facilísimo.
Catalina Goralski
02:19:43
If we build one book can you share it with you team (adjuncts)?
Cristina Moon
02:20:26
@Catalina Once it is publish yes you can
Michelle Pilati
02:20:28
Catalina - Absolutely. You could have one master book that you are all teaching from - or you could each make your own copy - so you could further customize it.
Catalina Goralski
02:20:42
¡Excelente!
Roberto Hurtado
02:22:40
so if the author edits it, it will update on our end? and we're not able to edit other's pages that we took into our own remix right?
Michelle Pilati
02:23:44
If you have not forked the page and the author makes an edit, you get the edit. It is something to think about. But you can also set it so that you are notified if something changes.
Begoña Cirera
02:23:49
Can someone explain what you would put inside Front Matter and Back Matter?
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:24:06
Is there a log that shows what edits have been made to the main copy?
Cristina Moon
02:26:43
This is the important part if you are remixing!
Stacy Jazán
02:27:02
May the 4th be with you!
Michelle Pilati
02:27:19
Transclude = your page is just a reflection of the main book. Not editable in this format.
Cristina Moon
02:27:38
This is where I got stuck the first time I played with the Remixer.
Michelle Pilati
02:28:06
Me too - and I accidentally modified the original book. They fixed that for the future.
Michelle Pilati
02:28:23
Fork = your page is now your page, you can edit it.
Luz Rodriguez
02:28:23
What is Forker?
Cristina Moon
02:28:33
@Michelle, I am sure your version was better.
Roberto Hurtado
02:28:35
sorry, could you show the forking feature again
Michelle Pilati
02:28:41
Fork just means you break the connection to the original.
Sara Pierce (she, her, ella)
02:29:50
@Michelle ---- re-pasting. Transclude = your page is just a reflection of the main book. Not editable in this format.
Alejandro Lee
02:30:15
So once it’s broken, then the page is yours and the original will not be connected when the master makes edits?
Michelle Pilati
02:30:26
Correct. Fork it and it is yours.
Alejandro Lee
02:30:57
Ok, so we need to “fork” all these pages and then start modifying it. That way we won’t worry about edits in the original affecting “our forked pages”
Michelle Pilati
02:31:06
Correct.
Roberto Hurtado
02:31:14
ah ok thanks!
Michelle Pilati
02:33:00
You want to be VERY careful about clicking that. Make sure you really want those notifications.
Michelle Pilati
02:33:34
It is totally normal to want to hear all these things forwards and backwards - it takes time to sink in.
Alejandro Lee
02:33:35
@Michelle —do you plan to offer more training? Perhaps smaller groups ?
Michelle Pilati
02:34:11
Absolutely - and we can set the up upon request.
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:34:16
Please let me know if any of my understanding is wrong...
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer
02:34:17
Transclude - The page that is showing up in YOUR book is actually located on the MAIN book (somewhere else), but you’re displaying it in your book.- This is kind of like when you put a YouTube link on a page and the video displays there, but the video is still on YouTube.- You can't edit the material because it's not really on your page.Fork - You've created a duplicate of the page and now, instead of displaying the version from the MAIN page, you're displaying your new copied version.- This would be like downloading a video and then being able to change it (trim, modify, etc.), and uploading that to your page. You would only do this with the proper permission, of course!- You _can_ edit the material.
Juliana Berte
02:34:23
Once I have the book, do I have link for my students? Can I embed it on Canvas? How do I share it?
Margarita Andrade-Robledo
02:34:51
Where can we go to see the recording, if you have to leave the meeting?
Michelle Pilati
02:34:52
Denise - that’s perfect. I like that way of explaining.
Cristina Moon
02:34:57
@Juliana you can do both.
Denise Cabanel-Bleuer

If you’re teaching in a CCC you’re supposed to be using Canvas - unless you are choosing to not use it for free and you are paying for it. But the process to Moodle is the same. The export is not specific to a CMS.
