FYI - Registration for Fall 2020 @ONE courses is now open. https://catalog.onlinenetworkofeducators.org/

24:59
Thanks, Michelle!

32:21
thanks Erin!

35:27
Where does the terminology for Distance Education courses live currently in the guidelines? In recommended or required?

35:35
Well said Jodie.

36:39
DECO meeting survey link: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5713745/Survey-of-Topics-for-DECOMonthly-Online-Meetings-2020-2021-copy

38:08
@Brian, if you are referring to the 3-tier definition, that is in the "recommendation" document.

38:32
Thats the one Erin. Thank you!

38:59
@Brian Terminology currently only resides in the definition of DE and sections 55200 of title 5. Recommendations from the field (FO, PO, OPA) will be in a compendium and will be based upon local definitions. I strongly encourage districts to not use "synchronous" or "asynchronous" but rather DE and either hybrid or not.

40:00
All Distance Education is where student and instructor are separated by space, the "time" they are separated is either scheduled (partially online/hybrid) or not.

40:17
TechConnect Cloud is the new name for 3CMedia Solutions, is that correct?

40:41
Is this connected to PlayPosit?

40:56
We will be sure to clarify that in the Q&A Michelle.

41:15
July 3

43:42
@Barney What standards for procurement are being applied to digital tool adoption? Who evaluates tools for privacy, security, ADA, and compatability with multiple devices?

44:01
And equity

44:44
Did the Ally end date adjust? I had thought that support continued through December.

44:56
Does this mean that Cranium Café will not be funded after December 31st?

45:10
Yeah cloud

45:14
Will NetTutor continue to be subsidized (as opposed to free) after December 31?

45:46
I have the same question as Lisa

46:05
Or more broadly, when would we know what products would be funded past Dec 31?

46:15
@Senya, yes, that date was adjusted after the memo went out. Ally is covered through December.

46:20
@Thomas, the CVC-OEI will provide a online counseling platform post December 31, 2020. Whether or not that will be Cranium Cafe remains to be seen as their contract will be up and cannot be extended.

46:48
@Erin - weird that the Ally folks are not making that clear

46:55
Thank you, Erin!

47:14
Chances of Labster, Proctorio, and Ally being extended?

47:33
@Lisa and @Sharon, NetTutor funding ends for non-Consortium Colleges on December 31, 2020, but Pisces remains free. NetTutor will remain funded for Consortium colleges through June 30, 2021.

48:10
@Andrea - thank you. Just wondering if it will go back to having a reduced/subsidized price after that

48:19
For non-consortium colleges

48:29
NetTutor pricing through College Buys will remain in place.

48:30
@Scott - The CCCCO is evaluating which tools will be extended past December. No decisions have been made yet.

48:31
@Andrea - how about Cranium Café?

48:33
Can you share those procurement standards?

49:11
@Anita, the CVC-OEI will provide a online counseling platform post December 31, 2020. Whether or not that will be Cranium Cafe remains to be seen as their contract will be up and cannot be extended.

49:27
Thank you, Andrea!

49:30
We have concerns with the camera features in Proctorio not reading students with darker skin tones.

49:32
@Erin: thanks. Is there a timeline?

50:05
@Cynthia - yes!!!

50:18
@Andrea - thanks - when do you anticipate the decision being made?

51:18
@Scott - Maybe by end of September. Don't quote me on that, though.

52:01
I don't think saying that "there will be a variety of equity issues" is sufficient to address the spectrum of equity issues regarding Proctorio and required use of a camera

52:14
@Lisa...thank you!

52:39
@Anita, as Erin mentioned, we are waiting for the CO’s system-wide procurement guidelines and will then begin the process. I wish I had a date, but I don’t. We will be as fast as we can.

53:02
If our call is to equity then all decisions should privilege equity

53:08
Interesting article about proctoring: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/08/proctoring-apps-subject-students-unnecessary-surveillance

53:11
@Vivian - yes!

53:55
this is a great conversation … thanks all - gives me some great things for discussion at my campus as well

55:40
@Cynthia...so many equity issues regarding effective use of surveillance software that are in addition to the procurement points I mentioned. Best practices are needed so we can use the product to improve teaching and learning and avoid impulse adoption (buying). There are no magic tools that are equal to effective teaching and learning practices that do not require fancy tools.

56:02
RE: the Adobe licensing - that price is for 6 mo. and per student, not FTES

56:41
Canvas Commons has a 2020 Quest program with a self-assessment rather than SmarterMeasure for all to use

57:19
@Jodie and @Cynthia we should discuss this in a future meeting. We have been having discussions at our campus about the inequities of surveillance software—lots to consider, as you mentioned.

57:22
@Anita What’s the best way to find it (search terms)

57:23
@Jodie…yes! Sounds like a presentation topic for a future meeting!

57:35
Absolutely

57:42
We attended Grackle yesterday and it was a strong salespitch. I'm not sure who is a google school in higher ed? We should be careful about recommending redundant products. It's very confusing and causes people to look at the tool rather than how the tool CAN help an instructor meet unit objectives and student learning outcomes.

58:09
We haven't got any announcement of Pronto funding ending. right now we still have it. When is current Pronto contract ending?

58:17
Yes! Equity in assessment is a necessary and timely topic!

58:27
Quest for Online Success 2020

58:48
Anita's Course in Commons is incredible! She has both a SmarterMeasure course AND one that untangles SM from Student Online Readiness.

59:19
@Thomas -our Pronto trial or free period ended at the end of Spring 2020

59:44
Not just FERPA - equity

01:00:10
Yes, Thomas, ours ended June 30 2020 as well.

01:00:39
There’s also a FERPA issue with combined sections and ConferZoom

01:00:42
@Thomas, Pronto offered all CCCs a free trial which ended June 30, 2020. The system didn’t hold a contact with them, but they do have negotiated pricing with College Buys.

01:01:04
All College Buys contracts can be found at https://spark.adobe.com/page/TavBbJcbYLjGi/.

01:01:05
Our Pronto subscription is still going, and I don't believe we're paying for it. Not sure how that is happening.

01:01:15
It would really help if ConferZoom supported scheduling sections

01:01:55
@Moses - yes, and if they would reprise their auto connection between Zoom and 3C/Cloud

01:01:57
@Moses. Right. ConferZoom in Canvas is very different than Zoom use with a browser.

01:03:03
How about we discuss [in the future] use of DVD's and copyrighted materials in DE?

01:03:06
We love Pronto!

01:03:08
Pronto is gaining more and more traction I think

01:03:12
We love Pronto!!!

01:03:12
We use Pronto extensiviely

01:03:13
Pronto is very popular at GCC

01:03:15
We love it

01:03:18
Picked up Pronto, love it

01:03:19
Students LOVE Pronto

01:03:19
YES! We love it!

01:03:20
We love Pronto

01:03:22
Wildly popular

01:03:27
Pronto is very widely used at Merced College. It had a bigger uptake than even Zoom.

01:03:28
Our teachers disliked it

01:03:47
We have mixed opinions at VC.

01:03:52
The Pronto Representatives are very reasonable as well

01:03:56
ARC faculty also had a love hate with it during our trail; we did not continue with it

01:03:58
They are amazing! Very responsive to our needs, updating the platform as needed. We work with them often.

01:04:06
A few faculty liked it, most did not!

01:04:12
Predatory Vendors are being exposed now. It was one thing to offer free tools to get us through in the immediate but long term legacy funding after depending on a tool is problematic. For example, Turnitin is not trying to offer "free" Math tool but we know that Turnitin will only do Enterprise licenses after.

01:04:58
Predatory publishers!!

01:05:05
Yes!

01:05:28
Equity in assessment is a necessary and timely topic!
I will add to our topics list!

01:05:46
Status of Canvas Studio?

01:05:58
Turnitin has destroyed most competition having acquired Vericite, UniCheck, and SimCheck. They then gouge colleges with extreme pricing.

01:06:00
Canvas Studio is ours until 2022!

01:06:12
Joanna is correct :)

01:06:13
Yes, Grading for Equity is an excellent book Joanna. Trying to see if my college will embrace it

01:06:22
Agree, @Eric

01:06:38
I'm thinking about our most used tools. Pronto is a widely used tool, and Cranium Café is now being piloted by a number of our Student Services groups, because of important features not included in Zoom.

01:07:03
@Eric, and now Gradescope!

01:07:16
We need more support for adopting and integrating tools, too. Each campus should not reinvent the wheel.

01:07:33
@Lene - absolutely

01:07:38
Google has now built in a plagiarism checker into assignment (of course we aren't Google schools). Wish Office would follow

01:08:02
Would be great if the State of Ca could create a plagiarism tool to be used across the UC, CSU, and CCC!!! Would save the state a ton of money.

01:08:13
And to build on to Lene’s point, we need to ensure that teaching faculty are included on the CollegeBuys/Foundation committee that decides which teaching tools we secure a consortium pricing for.

01:08:15
How would you handle this one? This is not necessarily a tech question - here was a recent incident that took place during an instructors ConferZoom session that was brought to our attention earlier today via a help desk ticket.During the instructors recorded ConferZoom session “a naked female walked into her boyfriend's room”. This student had their video turned on so this was visually present to the instructor and presumably to other students in the session in real time.

01:08:38
Gradescope! That's the Math tool from Turnitin. It is pushed as a tool to help instructors grade faster rather than being focused on improving teaching and learning around objectives and student learning outcomes.

01:08:55
@Anita 0_0

01:09:07
TurnItIn is fundamentally corrupt.

01:09:24
They monetize our student data. Absolutely horrendous.

01:09:24
the California Community college library group has a turn-it-in rate as well …

01:09:30
"Naked females" in a zoom sounds like a student code of conduct issue

01:09:56
ye s- ERIC!!!

01:10:16
great to see everyone!

01:10:23
Thank you all for this lively discussion!

01:10:28
Thanks everyone!

01:10:28
Thanks all!
