Will Breitbach
26:23
This is in reference to STAC - right?
Will Breitbach
26:34
yes - got it
Suzanne Wakim
30:46
does the equity assessment also include accessibility?
Leslie Reeves (she/her)
31:08
Wonderful question, Suzanne.
Suzanne Wakim
32:19
are we working with the accessibility center on that?
Brian (he/his/him) Weston
32:39
Will STAC purchases be reimbursed if it is included in the technology support? E.g. buy Ally for support next year but then it is part of the tech ecosystem.
Jim Julius (he/him)
32:55
Is this process intended to be a model that colleges can use locally as well?
Thomas Robb
33:47
For new members, what is STAC?
Jim Julius (he/him)
33:52
(And if so, will there be any centralized resource for sharing evaluations of tech to reduce duplication of effort?)
Carol Impara (she, her)
34:40
I’m sorry if I missed this. But where can we find the Course Gateway equity rubric?
Nick DeMello
35:04
or just fundamentally important
Katie Datko
35:13
Thomas -- STAC is the Systemwide Technology Access Collaborative (STAC).
Katie Datko
35:44
Here's an overview: https://foundationccc.org/CollegeBuys/Systemwide-Technology-Access-Collaborative-STAC
Kandace Knudson
36:13
@Carol could this be https://www.coursegateway.org/about ?
Kandace Knudson
36:20
We will ask
Carol Impara (she, her)
37:06
The CVC refers to the Peralta Equity Rubric and I was wondering how they compared
Thomas Robb
37:26
Thank you!
Betsy Allen
37:57
Will sample accommodation plans be provided/available for colleges?
Tracy Schaelen
38:14
If the larger process isn't a good fit for college use, perhaps the accessibility review process could be shared with the colleges for local accessibility reviews of technology?
Whitney Clay
39:35
When can we expect to hear a decision about Ally funding?
Brian (he/his/him) Weston
39:41
Thank you
Will Breitbach

Kandace Knudson
40:01
@Betsy, I’d imagine the CCC Accessibility Center could help with that
Betsy Allen
40:22
@Candice great!
Katie Datko
41:36

Jim Julius (he/him)
41:46
@Erin can you say more about what the “Course Gateway equity rubric” is?
Andrea Hanstein
42:16
@Ellen, it will be emailed to listservs and also posted to both the CVC and CollegeBuys websites.

@Helen aren't updates pushed via notifications from Commons
Anasheh Gharabighi
50:16
Yes!! I love the @One courses they’re always so helpful, so informative, and I pass along the content to our campus community in our “Tips of the Week”
Wendy Bass (she/her)
51:05
@One - this is so fantastic and thank you for sharing the course!
Helen Graves - CVC/@ONE
51:35
@will Yes, the Commons notifies of updates but I think you have to sign up to get the push notifications. I just wanted to be sure people were getting the latest version.
Jim Julius (he/him)
51:45
Again though, all of this - especially #4, - is a particular perspective of OCR - not a definitive interpretation of all federal or state accessibility regulations, correct?
Kandace Knudson
52:06
Yes, Jim. That’s our understanding
Katie Datko
53:10
Absolutely, Helen!
Darnell Kemp
53:15
Agreed!
Leslie Reeves (she/her)
53:22
Yes!
Suzanne Wakim

I’d love a link to the board policies. Our DE Comm is drafting board policies now.
Jim Julius (he/him)
58:56
The CCLC board policy templates are password protected. Most CCCs are subscribers - ask around and find out who has the access info for your institution
Nick DeMello
58:59
“before times” :-) Love it!
Piper Rooney (she/her)
59:26
Would you let us know the BP and AP numbers for the CCLC templates? Thanks!
Jim Julius (he/him)
59:31
But most colleges’ adopted BPs and APs are publicly available if you want to ask for links/examples
Craig Donahue
59:33
Will this PPt on Hyflex be available on the CCCDECO site?
Katie Datko
59:45
@Craig -- Yes.

were you wearing a mic?
Jon Stocker Merced College
01:06:33
Where was the OWL placed?

01:07:11
OWL as classroom management—cool
Matthew Moore
01:07:43
How did your campus decide upon 150 purchases?
Kandace Knudson
01:07:48
Senya, did you have to expand your wifi/broadband capacity at all?
Wendy Riggs (she/her)
01:08:09
I wonder how this would work with masks and social distancing in a pandemic world...
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:08:13
Such great information!
Helen Graves - CVC/@ONE
01:08:45
Did you do any breakout work? If so, what was the experience of live vs virtual students?
Wendy Bass (she/her)
01:08:52
I have some instructors from a specific vocal department saying that they have read research that students do not like this and success is not any higher. Do you have any suggestions for research which supports the hyflex model of teaching?
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:10:13
Do we know if additional classroom mic's could be added to the OWL system?
Nick DeMello
01:11:01
Two meeting owls can provide a single output stream?
Mary Wilhelm-Chapin
01:11:14
How do you accommodate for Deaf students and faculty who need time to focus on interpreters and on screen share?
David Vasquez
01:11:15
How was student privacy handled? Were students required to submit a release form for the streaming/recording?
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:11:36
Wendy, is there a need to convince that department of anything? I’d say you should have plenty of faculty willing to try it, and I wouldn’t waste time on trying to win over skeptics. This is still very emergent and I don’t think there’s any definitive generalizable research ...
Kandace Knudson
01:12:08
I agree, Jim
Mary Clarke-Miller
01:12:09
do you have any set up in computer labs?
Angela Cardinale (she/her)
01:12:13
How is this different for courses with activities/labs?
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
01:12:24
SFSU has been using HyFlex for over 10 years. Here is an eBook they produced that may be useful for you local conversations. https://edtechbooks.org/hyflex
Wendy Riggs (she/her)
01:12:38
This is incredibly helpful. thank you so much.
Katie Datko
01:12:38
Thanks, Michelle!
Cheryl Chapman, CVC
01:13:05
@Michelle thanks for that resource on Hyflex!
Audrey Blumeneau
01:13:15
Terrific information! Especially hearing student reactions and lessons learned for those that are remote. Would like to know more about how you trained both faculty and students (is there a checklist or document?). Thank you!
Wendy Bass (she/her)
01:14:06
@Michelle, thanks!
Marisa Whitney
01:14:12
You had apportionment on your first slide. Do you have anything to share on that?
Erin Larson
01:14:17
Was there an asynchronous option for the class? Were students able to switch between face-to-face or online from class to class?
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
01:14:27
Bryan Beatty is the contact at SFSU.
Katie Datko
01:14:29
With the move of many K-12 districts to hybrid (many are doing HyFlex), we should have more information coming out about how this works.
Audrey Blumeneau
01:14:29
@Michelle, Thank you!
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:15:01
I’d recommend this excellent CHE article on Hyflex too; it points to SFSU’s work as well: https://www.chronicle.com/article/our-hyflex-experiment-whats-worked-and-what-hasnt
Mary Clarke-Miller
01:15:18
for disabilities students can hearing aids connect via Bluetooth?
Nick DeMello
01:15:23
Is the integration of the audio something that the owl does or is it an in house solution?
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:15:31
Mine was answered - thank you!
Whitney Clay
01:15:55
I hope we can continue this Hyflex conversation at next month’s DECO meeting. There’s so much to learn from each other!
Margaret Worsley
01:16:07
Was there training needed to operate hyflex? If so how long did that take?
Gregory Beyrer
01:16:10
How was the workload for you? More work than a non-hyflex class?
Brett Myhren
01:16:57
Yes, Gregory, that is a common question on our campus.
Nick DeMello
01:17:03
Have you tried co-teaching? One managing the streams another on stage.
Katie Datko
01:17:07
Angela's point about pulling in IT/Facilities into this conversation is definitely critical. Getting these conversations to happen on a larger institutional level can be challenging.
Tracy Schaelen
01:17:08
Echoing Erin, are colleges considering including an asynchronous component? The original hyflex model offers students 3 learning pathways, including working asynchronously.
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:17:13
I’d be curious to hear from campuses that are going down this road with regard to how the working conditions groups/unions view this.
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:17:26
I have heard that some colleges are doing that - one teacher in person and one online
Nick DeMello
01:17:40
Double the class size, have two teachers, same student to teacher ratio but logistic advantages.
Gregory Beyrer
01:17:56
Thanks @Jim.
Brett Myhren
01:18:13
Yes, Jim. I would, too.
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:21:40
I think as with most research on hybrid/blended modalities, the research suggests that there is a great deal of potential for course designs that maximize the effectiveness of each modality. It’s not about the course model overall but the design and pedagogy employed within.
Cheryl Chapman, CVC
01:22:15
@Jim Thank you for that thought :0)
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:22:38
@Jim - I agree that pedagogy would be key
Katie Datko

April Weiming Qian
01:23:12
We did a PD session around HyFlex and curated some good resources. This article from EdSurge was interesting https://www.edsurge.com/news/2021-03-17-juggling-roomers-and-zoomers-how-teachers-make-hybrid-learning-work?utm_medium=email&_hsmi=116456965&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_TjRWa6or162WWp9aXauGBnK9vQx0LerEUN2MnxjckUu5J-HDjsjhpBjML1KgL7o9TGZWJ6aLNH19arSAQ7cAHDcqOgg&utm_content=116456965&utm_source=hs_email
Bob Nash
01:23:22
Agreed Jim. I'm just wondering if the investment in time and money to add this modality will generate any measurable gains in metrics we want to increase.
Gregory Beyrer
01:23:24
Thank you @April
Kandace Knudson
01:23:47
Faculty are separate from students and therefor it should be DE I’d think
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:24:15
@Bob I think it’s very easy to make an argument for the potential … but it’s definitely a “possible” not a “will” ...

Carol Impara (she, her)
01:24:47
Thank you for this introduction and discussion. I need to go to another meeting.
Cheryl Chapman, CVC
01:24:57
@Katie thanks for that resource! Isn’t it interesting that the original article for those modalities was written 10 years ago!
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
01:25:01
And if it’s DE then Title 5 applies (student-student interaction).
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:25:07
Yes - I think Scheduling is a whole other conversation. How do you put it in the Schedule in a way that clearly conveys the options?
April Weiming Qian
01:26:33
We have the same question about scheduling
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:26:43
What Joanna just described is I think the most likely HyFlex variant for us to use … but really it isn’t true HyFlex because there is no flexibility for the students ...
Nick DeMello
01:26:54
More reason to explore teaching teams. If it’s twice the work, put twice the people on it.
Suzanne Wakim
01:27:15
Sorry to ask for a repeat. Are there discussions at the CO about synchronous online being something different, or will those remain under the standard "DE" definitions?
Kandace Knudson
01:27:25
Yes, it would seem like the public health impacts from the pandemic will take some of the “flex” out of HyFlex
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:27:26
I thought the idea was that students could choose the method of attendance each week that works best for them. So even if they sign up for the "online" section, they could come to class if they wanted to. No?
Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her)
01:27:29
@Jim, agreed. HyFlex was designed to keep student choice at the center.
Dr. Kristi Blackburn
01:27:45
would it need to be an instructor, or could a TA position be used?
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:28:13
@Lisa maybe … but it seems like that could end up posing significant logistical challenges if not bureaucratic ones
Kandace Knudson
01:28:16
With social distancing, it’d be easy to over-max a classroom when too many students come to campus
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:28:25
Yep
Katie Datko
01:29:13
A great 'non-academic' place to get information about faculty HyFlex experiences is the FB Pandemic Pedagogy page.
Katie Datko
01:30:03
And Joshua Kim from Inside Higher Ed gives a great overview of what can make HyFlex work... https://tinyurl.com/wyhhma85

01:30:57
Great suggestions, Nick!
Dawn Heuft
01:32:52
The zoom question just made me wonder if it only works with zoom or can it be used with TEAMS
Dawn Heuft
01:33:01
ahh you just said Teams :-)
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:33:46
If anyone is really interested in more detailed technical ideas for HyFlex room setup, https://flexspace.org/ is a great resource. You do need to join for free to get access.
Whitney Clay
01:33:53
Yes! Let’s please revisit this topic. There’s so much to learn and explore.
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:34:13
@Jim - So then the idea is that students have to sign up for one modality or the other and then stick to it?
Audrey Blumeneau
01:34:28
Great question, Mary.
CCC DECO
01:34:32
@Jim, @Lisa, you’re right that students would. Not technically have the choice once they are registered into different classes…
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:34:57
@Lisa I think that’s the easiest way to start down this road, especially to deal with COVID concerns about classroom capacity
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:35:16
I see. I thought that was the "flex" part
Linda
01:35:26
You know the SLI can be "pinned" by the DHH student and have it and the teacher's slides at the same time
Katie Datko
01:35:47
And not just for hearing impaired students, but also students who may have learning disabilities/ADHD.
Linda
01:35:48
ZoomRooms will allow multiple input, Nick.
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:35:56
“True” HyFlex means every student can choose every week between live in-person, live online, and asynchronous online.
Nick DeMello
01:36:14
Could have a separate simulations video feed of the translator. With a dashboard, students could tap into the second feed as needed.
Linda
01:36:20
Nick, have you tried Manycam?
Nick DeMello
01:36:39
Have not, is it a way to integrate multiple video feeds?
Linda
01:36:47
Yes
Nick DeMello
01:36:58
Would love the link (or is it easy to google)?
Lisa Beach (she/her)
01:36:59
@Jim - sooo…. we're talking about something other than "true" HyFlex.
Jim Julius (he/him)
01:37:14
for sure
Whitney Clay
01:37:20
I’d love two different conversations: one about the tech and another focused only on pedagogy
Cheryl Chapman, CVC
