I think the issue with "filling up" is the funding methods from the State.
Rick Manzano
01:20:45
It is a long standing systemic funding issue.
Rebecca Ortiz
01:22:18
As we enter this brave space as professors of color, do you have suggestions for us as we try to engage in self-care with colleagues around the state?
Catherine Emley
01:22:49
Thank you Michelle for a brave discussion and brilliantly delivered! xoxo
Stephanie Clark
01:23:24
Maybe just a reminder that our classrooms can be the Brave Spaces that we are looking to create. Don't need admin approval for that! It might look different in a small classroom vs. a large classroom.
Jennifer Meloni
01:23:39
From Maria Aguilar Beltran...Our State Student Academic Senate is making some formal recommendations for how we can create spaces for students. I encourage everyone to watch the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz-Pl1rexog&t=1s

I am reminded that I am 1/6 full-time Black faculty. Black students need "to see themselves" in these positions.

Jennifer Meloni

How are you being proactive and equity-minded in your practices?
Jennifer Meloni
02:17:10
What are some of the challenges you face, especially in hiring part-timers?
jodi coffman
02:17:29
being sure that there is a faculty member that is EEO trained
Rebecca Ortiz
02:19:12
I would agree with Stephanie on her perspective of our hiring of faculty.
Stephanie Clark
02:19:33
EEO is not for part-time hiring. Which is problematic.
Monica Zarske
02:19:43
We've been putting more emphasis on all faculty participating on a hiring committee to be EEO trained but I do believe that more global discussions/training should be taking place.
Stephanie Clark
02:21:31
I love the idea of developing intentional discipline pools that include a committee review once a year so our hires are already vetted for equity-mindedness.
Ashly Bootman
02:22:34
Trying to keep up with HR procedures and expectations can be difficult. Having HR work more closely with committees would help.
Rebecca Ortiz
02:27:39
I have seen many of my students working in classified positions on campus. We have hired 2 of our students as adjuncts in psychology. These types of hires could be understood in terms of how growing our own can be done and what the obstacles are in doing this.
Steve Bautista
02:28:16
IMO - If we want to truly disrupt the system and create a more culturally responsive CC faculty AND administrators, we need to create training programs that provide the theoretical foundations, pedagogical training, and a set of competencies that we can use to evaluate candidates. GYO programs can also often times replicate vs. diversify.
Stephanie Clark

@steve, yes!! We need to be intentional (explicitly) in growing our own and preparing the faculty we want and need.
