Danny Dunne
01:06:24
What classes do he teach?
Robert Rennicks
01:06:50
II teach literature courses - mythology and survey courses
Danny Dunne
01:07:25
Thanks. I teach Greek Mythology too, so this will help.
Danny Dunne
01:12:30
Is Films on Demand a website?
John Stephens
01:12:40
well anyone show how all this is placed into canvas/modules
Robert Rennicks
01:12:48
Films on Demand is a university Database
Vivie Sinou
01:14:37
I want to take your class!!
jameshusting
01:15:23
Now I AM overwhelmed!!! lol
Danny Dunne
01:15:38
I concur with John's question.
Robert Rennicks
01:16:20
Vivie, you can stop this now...I went over this in the powerpoint
Aaron Garner
01:16:50
Great presentation Bob.
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:18:46
Thank you, Bob!
Josie Malik
01:18:55
Steve I share the same sentiments
Sara McDougall
01:19:03
yes
rosemary.rodriguez
01:19:07
yes
Kerry Steers
01:19:50
Make sure the screen is open first before you attempt
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:19:59
me!
Aaron Garner
01:19:59
I can go
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:20:07
I can go next
Danny Dunne
01:20:12
No problem. That's probably going to happen in my class as I am a first time user, too.
Kerry Steers
01:22:03
Its loading
Vivie Sinou
01:22:22
Martha, Aaron next... :)
Vivie Sinou
01:23:44
for those of you who are new to Canvas - items with due dates get added to the calendar automatically
Danny Dunne
01:24:42
Got it, but how do you get this onto Canvas, or will this be shown later?
Vivie Sinou
01:25:56
OER = Open Educational Resources
John Stephens
01:26:07
all this is showing the end result which is great but how do I get there??
Danny Dunne
01:26:33
I have the same question as John.
Christopher Kim
01:26:48
How to get to design your shell?
Christopher Kim
01:26:55
Is that the question?
John Stephens
01:27:06
good question!
Christopher Kim
01:27:15
I can help, if you would like
Vivie Sinou
01:27:19
one unit at a time... one week at a time... we'll talk about it
Danny Dunne
01:27:56
More or less. I need to know how to get it into the system where the students can see it and I can interact with them, with or without video.
John Stephens
01:27:58
Ya What's a shell?
Kerry Steers
01:28:38
This is a goods list of videos to help you get started in Canvas.https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-18584-set-up-your-canvas-course-in-30-minutes-or-less
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:28:42
If faculty could get a template for a home page, it would help. As well as a template for the first module, Course Orientation. We should all have a template like Bob has.
Christopher Kim
01:28:48
I would recommend using zoom to do direct online contact
Vivie Sinou
01:28:50
For Canvas training, hold on... I'll get you recorded videos on how to work with it
Danny Dunne
01:29:11
Ok. Chat moving fast. Need to copy the url.
Vivie Sinou
01:29:22
Think of a 'shell' as your classroom, where you hold discussions, lecture, post materials, give quizzes
Danny Dunne
01:30:52
Kerry. So that's entire address I enter?
Vivie Sinou
01:30:56
sure
Vivie Sinou
01:32:08
I have the above link (getting started in 30-minutes or less) and other resources to started here: https://pdcdeltacollege.com/
Kerry Steers
01:32:24
yep
John Stephens
01:32:57
In Canvas can you mark things right or wrong on a student assignment/quiz? How is that done?
Christopher Kim
01:34:51
yes
Kerry Steers
01:34:55
Quizzes are scored automatically, if you have a space for a short answer in a quiz you will need to grade them manually which can all be done in Canvas. Assignments function the same way.
Kerry Steers
01:35:12
All of this is done via the grades tab in the course shell.
Danny Dunne
01:35:26
All this can be done while I am in Canvas to create these things we are being shown?
Christopher Kim
01:35:54
I have the students submit a PDF version of the completed lab. I then can grade the lab and mark what is wrong and why in canvas
John Stephens
01:38:14
could an example of how quizzes are graded automatically in canvas?
Kerry Steers
01:38:17
You can, when you grade an assignment like a pdf there is a viewer that opens that you can use to annotate the pdf
Christopher Kim
01:38:17
You can also set it up so the students can take a picture of completed paper and upload if with the phone app and you can grade the pictures
Pat McClanahan
01:39:41
If you go into Grades, click on a student's specific assignment you will see a small arrow on the right side of the column, clicking opens a sidbar on the right, and select SpeedGrader....this will walk you through each student's submission allowing you to grade and comment.
Danny Dunne
01:39:46
Are scantrons the thing of the past?
Pat McClanahan
01:42:40
Students WILL NOT watch a video much longer than 15 minutes unless it is outstanding...I agree with martha
Danny Dunne
01:42:46
This is a bit daunting, especially since we only have a few days left to have it implemented for students to use and for me to do my job.
Pat McClanahan
01:43:36
Danny - keep it simple....some of us have been using Canvas for several years...and as Bob said - it takes time to gather the content.
Christopher Kim
01:44:15
I would try to complete it just a week at a time...
Danny Dunne
01:45:11
That's the way I'll do it. One week at a time. Thanks For 2 weeks?
Christopher Kim
01:46:53
I just took my powerpoint and handouts and used a screen capture program with a mic and record that as lecture
Christopher Kim
01:47:25
If you use different programs to make exams a lot of the time Canvas and import different formats
Christopher Kim
01:47:34
can*
Christopher Kim
01:47:56
Therefore you will not have to rewrite everything
Danny Dunne
01:48:44
Sound advice. Thanks. I have lots of PP presentations, handouts, etc., so that helps.
Christopher Kim
01:49:45
If you have PDF of the handouts, you can use something like powerpoint or OneNote to create custom videos
Danny Dunne
01:50:16
I just need to learn how to get them into Canvas, but it sounds simple enough from this morning's session.
Christopher Kim
01:50:31
Videos or PDFs?
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:50:56
My colleague, Steve McCarty, shared this. Great resource for starting from Contra Costa College https://sites.google.com/view/remoteinstructionresources
Christopher Kim
01:51:30
You can use the attach file function
Christopher Kim
01:52:14
Videos... I would upload to YouTube and then share the link
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:53:28
I think we need to be flexible with students at this time. They are stressed right now!
Vivie Sinou
01:53:42
Agreed!
Danny Dunne
01:53:53
True. So are many of us.
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:54:38
You can also record directly into Canvas if you have a webcam
MARTHA VILLARREAL
01:55:08
Can I take your piano class, lol!
Christopher Kim
01:56:06
YouTube also gives you information on video, number of views and when. It allows you to see if they are watching the videos.
Danny Dunne
01:59:43
My major concern is my film class. After lecture on symbolism, etc., I show the film with a way that ensures them being in class on film night. So now I learned that can't download the film into canvas. Big problem.
Christopher Kim
02:00:30
I have a way around that
Danny Dunne
02:02:39
Please enlighten me.
Christopher Kim
02:03:09
Do you have google drive and a MP4 file of the film or clip?
Christopher Kim
02:04:53
You could also upload it to YouTube if there is no copyright
jameshusting
02:05:56
Best advise yet!! One week at a time!!!
Danny Dunne
02:06:05
I have google drive, but the films are shown by DVD, either a DVD player in the classroom, or on the computer if the class doesn't have the player. I don't show clips, rather the entire film: Film as Literature.
Christopher Kim
02:06:51
You can rip the DVD to MP4 using a program called handbrake
Christopher Kim
02:08:58
They may have something at the PDC to do that for you.
Danny Dunne
02:11:09
OK. Thanks. I teach at Mountain House and rarely get to canvas. What is PDC?
Danny Dunne
02:11:21
Get to campus I meant.
Christopher Kim
02:11:35
https://www.deltacollege.edu/department/professional-development-center
Christopher Kim
02:12:15
I use handbrake a lot to take clips from different movies and such
Danny Dunne
02:13:41
OH. Got it. Thanks again.
Christopher Kim
02:14:12
https://handbrake.fr/
Melanie Marshall
02:14:24
Where did you make your avatar's?
Christopher Kim
02:15:41
A lot of times people use the photobooth app on OSX
Christopher Kim
02:15:55
Not sure if the newer versions have it still
Melanie Marshall
02:16:08
I don't have a mac
Danny Dunne
02:16:59
I assume all these presentations are for online classes only, right?
Christopher Kim
02:17:17
I like this one
Christopher Kim
02:17:19

La Tasha
02:17:26
I'm courious as to how to create an class in Canvas? Where do I start?
Christopher Kim
02:17:41
LOL... Mac not mic.... sorry about that
Christopher Kim
02:18:54
Your shell should already be there. It should have your classes listed once you log into Canvas
Christopher Kim
02:19:06
shell = class
Danny Dunne
02:19:07
I'm trying to write these URLs down. They are all that long? Type in the exact format as shown?
Christopher Kim
02:20:20
I wouldn't try to write them... highlight them and then ctrl+c to copy the highlighted text and then in word it ctrl+v to paste the text
Vivie Sinou
02:20:23
Info on how to get started with Canvas, guides, videos, and support is here:

How do you put the Done button in?
Vivie Sinou
02:21:14
i will add the additional resources that were shared during this session on this page for all of you.
Danny Dunne
02:21:59
.com, not .edu?
Melanie Marshall
02:23:27
Thanks!
Melanie Marshall
02:24:05
so cute!
Melanie Marshall
02:24:15
Yes
MARTHA VILLARREAL
02:26:10
I upload the Bitmoji’s from my iPhone. I create it on my phone. Then send message to myself. Download it as a photo. Then I send it to my email. Then I download it to my computer. Next step, how to add to Canvas. Open where you want to place it in Canvas. Let’s say, Announcement, then on the left side, highlight “Images” - in yellow on the left.
Christopher Kim
02:26:39
You save the picture in your files section in canvas
Melanie Marshall
02:26:57
Got it! That's something for later, LOL
MARTHA VILLARREAL
02:27:00
Click on Images, then it will say, open file. Upload the Picture (which should be in jpeg format) Then it will appear.
Christopher Kim
02:27:03
i.e. upload to canvas
MARTHA VILLARREAL
02:28:05
What is a good size for your bitmoji on Canvas?
Christopher Kim
02:28:42
all the sizes are in pixels... I usually use something like 200x200 if it is a square
Melanie Marshall
02:29:59
yes
Aaron Garner
02:30:29
You can change the size of images my dragging a corner of the image in our out.
Christopher Kim
02:30:35
yes
Christopher Kim
02:30:44
once it is in the post
MARTHA VILLARREAL
02:31:43
Thanks to Christopher. I always wondered.
Aaron Garner
02:31:44
Thank you to all the participants. I have an appointment in a bit. Have fun and don’t forget to brush in between meals.
MARTHA VILLARREAL
02:36:05
Christopher, can you only use an iPad or Surface to use the white board?
