Sean Davis
01:12:31
I didn’t know that! Thanks, James!
Jim Julius
01:15:33
Please don’t hesitate to ask questions as this is going, folks. We can answer here in chat or if you want to see something again, that’s fine too - let us know
Candice Klingbeil
01:21:49
If you didn't make that your home page, how would students access it, through Pages? Is it possible to put that page in a module?
Sean Davis
01:22:53
Candice - it depends on how you set up what students can see and what is hidden from them.
Sean Davis
01:23:01
Yes, you can put the page in a module
Sean Davis
01:23:12
I will cover that in my part - coming up in a bit
Candice Klingbeil
01:23:45
Oh great! Thank you!
Justin Kidwell
01:26:26
So when you make an announcement, it automatically emails a copy of it to the students in that class?
Justin Kidwell
01:26:49
awesome. thanks
Billy Gunn
01:27:25
Justin—It should send an email to students, but it depends on their notification settings.
Billy Gunn
01:27:38
I will go over notifications in my portion
Justin Kidwell
01:27:54
Gotcha, thanks Billy
Billy Gunn
01:28:58
if they haven’t changed their default settings, it will send an email to the address they have designated on our enrollment system (SURF)

01:29:21
All this is so overwhelming for me, and I’m sure for some others too. It will be a huge help for some of us to have step by step written instructions to follow so that we can start using Canvas and help our students at this critical time. Different people have different learning styles. Some can watch a video and learn; some can’t. If we want this to become our main way of communication with our students, then we need to learn how to use it. Can you guys please come up with short written instruction for each function available on Canvas? You can title each lesson “Canvas for Dummies, Lesson 1, etc!”
Billy Gunn
01:29:24
no worries :)
Billy Gunn
01:30:28
Hi Hossein,
Jim Julius
01:30:30
Hossein, written instructions exist from Canvas - the Canvas Guides are excellent. I encourage you to check them out at https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10460
James Garcia
01:31:25
Thanks Jim, I was looking for that just now!
Billy Gunn
01:31:46
Hosseini, also, you can do some of the one-on-one coaching sessions in the afternoons this week. I think your point is a good one—we are all at different places and need to make a plan that works for each person
Jim Julius
01:31:53
There are also very specific links to particular Canvas guides based on what you might be trying to do, in the Taking Classroom Activities Online chart at https://miracosta.instructure.com/courses/19220/pages/a1-dot-3-taking-classroom-activities-online?module_item_id=685432

Then I guess I should leave this meeting and start reading! Thank you all and have a great day. :)

01:57:45
Just set up a couple of modules by chapter for Math and added the files I have made and the assignment. Really easy from what you shared. Thanks.
Jim Julius
01:58:15

James Garcia
01:58:21
That’s awesome, Vicky!!
Sean Davis
01:58:57
Thanks for sharing, Vicky! This is what we are here for! :)
Candice Klingbeil
02:03:50
What is the T in Speedgrader? Is that for typing a response?
Jim Julius
02:04:51
Yes, Candice, that allows insertion of a text response
Jim Julius
02:04:55
Or comment
Candice Klingbeil
02:05:03
Thank you!
James Garcia
02:05:05
Yeah its the freetext annotation!
Candice Klingbeil
02:05:21
Thank you!
James Garcia
02:07:48
The rubrics are very helpful when grading

Three dots is snowman or kebab menu lol
phillipboland
02:15:50
I find it useful to move “Totals” to the front next to the student’s name.
phillipboland
02:17:29
This can be accomplished by scrolling over “Totals” box and clicking on the 3 dots.
Jim Julius

Haha nice sean
Barbara Vega
02:22:56
are all students in the email directory
Carina Diaz
02:23:27
@barbara yes
Vicky Noddings
02:24:32
How do the students access conferzoom
John Walcutt
02:27:02
If I want students to watch a film in the library collection, how do I put that in assignments, and how do I know they have the capability to watch them? Thanks.
Carina Diaz
02:27:10
is it recommended to schedule meetings thru canvas or do it directly on confer zoom site? If I do decide to schedule it on Canvas does it automatically schedule it on confer zoom site? Thank you
Genevieve Yan
02:27:29
Thank you for that! Such a simple thing to drag the app up, but I didn't realize I could do that!
Vicky Noddings
02:27:56
In student view when I click confer zoom, it sends an error message.
James Garcia
02:27:59
John, if you use Kanopy for films from the library, you can use the Embed code I explained a little earlier in the video.
John Walcutt
02:28:14
Can every student see that?
Jim Julius
02:28:15
Genevieve, yes, and it works in reverse - you drag things down or disable if there are menu items you want to hide
Genevieve Yan
02:28:26
Thanks!
Jim Julius
02:28:47
Carina, honestly you can go either way.
Jim Julius
02:29:02
John, yes if you are asking about ConferZoom on the course menu
Carina Diaz
02:29:16
Thank you :)
John Walcutt
02:29:26
Jim- I am asking about Canopy. Thanks.
James Garcia
02:29:37
John, as long as it is embedded into your page, they should just be able to hit play. If for whatever reason they can’t, it would just prompt them to enter their credentials
John Walcutt
02:29:52
Thanks!
James Garcia
02:29:58
No worries!
James Garcia
02:31:09
Hey y’all I’ve got to jump over to another meeting. I hope this was helpful!
Melissa
02:31:12
This is not realy the place for this question, but since I'm here, can anyone remind of how we can get a computer/Chromebook to a student who needs one?
Sean Davis
02:31:21
Thank you, James!
Jim Julius

Hi, Melissa. Our VP of Student Services is doing a presentation on resources for students at 12pm - immediately following this workshop. I think that question is perfect for that session.
Candice Klingbeil
02:33:10
How can you post a pre-recorded Zoom lecture (without students) in Canvas without using the LTI tool?
Jim Julius
02:33:28
Melissa, AIS is working on getting tech for faculty - they are saying for now you should submit a request via the Help Desk in the Portal.
Jim Julius
02:33:59
Oh sorry Melissa, I see the question was about students
Melissa
02:34:00
Thanks, Sean. Another question--kind of a silly one. How do I put a picture along with my name into zoom? I did it for my own zoom account, but I'd like to have a picture pop up here, too.
Candice Klingbeil
02:34:07
Thank you!
Jim Julius
02:34:38
Melissa, also there is info on the student FAQ document about tech for students. See https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RAdlsk66sb3kXjZGEmj-vJq6ZGQUslo1XYTMYnUuxW0/edit#heading=h.lpdeye328ht0
Melissa
02:34:51
Thanks, Jim.
Jim Julius
02:36:28
Melissa, you can go to Zoom settings and then choose Virtual Background
Jim Julius
02:36:51
If that’s what you mean
Genevieve Yan
02:37:17
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this! Some of it I was familiar with, but I learned a lot too. I really appreciate the knowledge and experience everyone is sharing right now.
Genevieve Yan
02:37:37
Melissa, the Virtual Backgrounds are super cool!
Jim Julius
02:38:36
Melissa if you mean just a picture of yourself, that’s what you set in your Zoom profile. You need to make sure you’re logged into Zoom when you access a Zoom meeting in order to have the profile picture show up
John Walcutt
02:41:54
Thanks, Sean!
