From the Teaching Talk today: a number of questions related to class cancellations and when these will be known

27:24
Yay!!! Scott!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

27:39
Awesome, thank you Scott and Treva

27:44
Thanks to faculty for their flexibility!

27:46
Yeah, I want to thank Scott and Trev too!!

27:47
I want to c

28:02
Yes, Treva and Scott have already been so responsive to my questions about Canvas Studio. Thank you!

28:16
Thank you Scott and Treva for all of your hard work and dedication and help for all of us during this transition!

28:17
Thank you!

28:28
thank you to all who have been supporting all faculty with training and resources!

28:34
Thank you to Lori, Sara, Kelsey and Kenya!!!

29:19
A big shout out to the Leadership Team for all the hard work and hours that you have put in keeping us all on track!

29:43
@Lori -- Ditto!!

29:55
I would like to acknowledge all the instructors who are having to go w-a-a-a-y outside their comfort zone and teach online to support our students. I know how difficult it is, and it shows our dedication to the community.

30:13
Thanks so much to Dr. Scott and Treva for their wisdom and time to teach all of us Canvas…

31:51
@Scott, can you share the link again here in Chat?

I have a video coming out tonight providing 4 options for your office hours. Watch for it!

33:31
Please use instruction@ltcc.edu and we will make sure the message gets out to everyone for office hour changes. Thank you!

45:12
Part of our job is to message to all that DE education is really advanced at this point. For many of us teaching in DE over the years, we can help with that messaging.

47:24
Also, on the Virtual Campus for students, there is the link to free ebooks from VitalSource

54:57
Use modules and PLEASE hide Pages from your students’ view on Canvas. Modules are the navigation through your class.

56:18
Do we have a plan if an instructor gets ill?

57:31
I use group projects. That helps students connect with each other.

58:06
It might be good to include the College’s Student Success videos/page in your Canvas class. http://www.ltcc.edu/academics/virtual_campus/virtualcampusstudentsupport.php

01:00:13
Students are also asking counselors the plan for face to face classes. Please let us know the messaging too.

01:00:33
should we consider recording our lectures for anytime access for our students?

01:00:40
Will you notify students to get Zoom app in time for classes? and is it safe to assume they will all have audio and video capability?

01:01:09
Amber, there are some ideas included about lecture recording in the videos at the top of this chat. You can save lectures in a number of places in Canvas.

01:01:35
Sue, you do not necessarily need the Zoom app. A setting in Profiles

01:01:37
I called my students to let them know about changes.

01:01:40
How do we access the recorded meetings?

01:01:58
thank you Jeff

01:01:59
Beyond using video...it can be good to have space to have more social/casual interactions. You can have a discussion thread where each week you can share pictures of pets, dream vacations, etc. to try to build community. It might seem small, but it can help engage students. In a slightly different vein, I think that there would also be the possibility of using Google docs (or the Word equivalent) to collaborate on different assignments. As a writing instructor, it is nice to work with students on assignments or model work.

01:02:02
a setting in Zoom allows anyone to use the join from URL without an app.

01:02:17
Do we get to decide which portal we use (Zoom vs Canvas studio?)

01:02:24
I’m planning to do discussions in ZOOM

01:02:41
Marissa, the option is up to you in terms of using Zoom or Canvas Studio.

01:03:15
I might want to do another Zoom training soon.

01:03:43
Our Instructor Cadre probably won't be ready to go "live" with our online class by the first day of the spring quarter. Can we delay the beginning of our course until we're ready?

01:03:55
Please make sure that you are keeping captioning in mind :) Zoom does great auto captions and transcripts. We may need to request captioners or interpreters for webinars.

01:04:16
Canvas Studio also has great built-in captioning

01:04:39
The ESL classes are all using Zoom for the Spring quarter.

01:04:52
But, Kellie, Spanish is not able to caption, correct?

01:04:53
What about captioning in Spanish?

01:04:59
Are we allowed (by law) to record students with Zoom?

01:05:04
You can choose the caption language in Canvas Studio.

01:05:21
It will do Spanish.

01:05:34
Thank you Scott!

01:05:42
You don’t have to post the videos to an external site and this will keep the recordings private (to Logan).

01:06:09
Thank you, Scott!

01:06:57
See the image for the Spanish example of captioning.

01:07:10
I saw that Zoom has the ability to do "breakout rooms" if you want to have your students get into groups to discuss something for ten or so minutes. I really enjoy small-group discussions in my classroom, so it is nice to know I can still facilitate this in Zoom. I just wonder if I will be able to "eavesdrop" as the instructor on all their different group discussions in these breakout rooms. Has anyone tried this?

01:07:13
Thanks Lindsey

01:07:32
How do we get a background like Lindsey?

01:07:37
Mary, I think you could eavesdrop. Haven’t tried it yet.

01:07:37
Mary, yes, the instructor can float between break out rooms.

01:07:46
Yay! Thanks, Melanie!

01:08:20
A space for us to collaborate is the LTCC Canvas, Online & EVE User Group at https://laketahoecc.instructure.com/courses/206 . Go and see if you have access, if not, please shoot me an email.

01:08:26
Normally we only do walk-in registration, will there be an option to register online?

01:09:15
for virtual backdrop, go to the settings on the app (see image)

01:09:34
Melinda, backgrounds are in your settings. If it is your zoom, just click on the “up arrow” next to “stop video”. Otherwise it is in your profile settings. This is a generic one. Students like it.

01:09:45
thanks!

01:10:00
You can also upload an image to replace the default virtual backgrounds.

01:11:39

Thanks for all your hard work... Treva, Scott and the entire admin team!

01:16:43
In this time of transition, Can faculty order supplies from their own department budgets (using their own money, to be reimbursed by LTCC) and have things delivered to their homes to expedite the process? And assuming normal channels to be reimbursed?

01:17:09
Is there a way we can get our office monitors and keyboards?

01:17:52
Probletinuty

01:17:57
Hi Bryan - not sure of the purchasing question but IT is working on a process for checking out our office technology. Please stand by.

01:19:47
If we need to give our some of our students incompletes this quarter to allow them more time to get final materials in (past the April 1 final grade submission deadline), is there a way to file the paperwork for an incomplete online? In the past, I've done this in person at the One-Stop office.

01:20:04
Leslie Amato -in the past the noncredit ESL and HSE classes have only done F2F registration. We are setting up for thenoncredit registration forms to be put online and for students to be able to register for our classes. We know they will need help but we will be able to talk them through it.

01:20:29
Hi Bryan - in terms of getting technology, we will arrange times for folks to come in and pick up technology when we have our check-out procedure in place

01:20:53
And regarding purchasing, I’ve reached out for clarity. Stay tuned!

01:22:53
Thanks Maxine, I had asked that as I believe you had that question earlier - Thanks for the follow-up

01:23:35
Adjunct Faculty - please send a note to instruction@ltcc.edu letting us know you participated today. Thank you.

01:24:17
This training in Zoom is amazing. I have been teaching totally online for two colleges and never have used Zoom. This will enhance my teaching tremendously.

01:24:23
Poll is hard, I need many of those!

01:24:27
How we will contact IT if we need help?

01:24:28
How do I waive pre-req challenges remotely?

01:25:01
Pre reqs can be cleared by a counselor. You or a student can email counselor@ltcc.edu

01:25:01
Is there a way to file the paperwork for an incomplete online?

01:25:12
Instruction will reach out to faculty with pre-req challenges and we will approve them through email.

01:25:32
Thanks, Sarah M.

01:25:46
Thanks, Lori.

01:25:49
Mary Cook- I can forward you the "incomplete" Form to fill if you have students that require it.

01:25:51
Mary, I filed an incomplete this week with A&R. It was pretty seemless

01:26:02
Thanks, Kenya and Larry.

01:26:25
Leslie- Steve Berry and I have been in touch. Our forms are online so we will just have them done online and h

01:26:47
help students through it. Thanks for the support!

01:26:49
Will we be able to fill out and SIGN our timesheets for office hours and committees online? I don't have a printer at home.

01:27:06
Hi Kenya, Could you please send me an incomplete as well?

01:27:44
Mary - instruction@ltcc.edu

01:28:11
Of course Sue, I will forward it to you as well.

01:28:20
Thanks Jeff! :)

01:28:33
Thanks, Kenya.

01:28:37
When issuing an Incomplete for an online 2020WI course and you need a student to have access to your online course shell, please contact me at tthomas@ltcc.edu

01:29:51
I don’t see the Corona Virus stats from Lake Tahoe down here in Riverside County in SoCal. How bad is it there?

01:30:04
Jeff, do we plan on staying at Level 2 moving forward at this time?

01:30:21
If you have SLO Assessments due for Winter Quarter, please remember those are due when grades are due April 1.

01:31:06
What is the campus schedule for the rest of the week?

01:32:02
Jenny, there are no cases of Coronavirus in El Dorado County as of today…

01:33:10
In Central California

01:33:30
There are a bunch of plants in the bio lab that need to be watered 1x/week, would I be able to get in during Level 2 to water, or someone I can talk to about getting plants watered? Thanks.

01:33:33
There are cases on my street!

01:33:50
Is there any chance of the campus re-opening for F2F or we not even looking at that opportunity to meet with our students in classroom setting

01:34:17
Hi Sue - Let’s talk about this. We will work it out!

01:35:03
Okay thanks Ali!

01:36:14
Thanks Solange. We have 48 cases and 6 deaths.

01:36:37
Wow. Very sad….

01:37:05
Zoom Pro is $14.99 a month. Can LTCC reimburse faculty for this purchase?

01:37:20
Brian, do not purchase.

01:37:26
https://www.conferzoom.org/ConferZoom/SignUp

01:37:30
IT help?

01:37:55
You may need to sign up again. Solange had an issue and it finally worked, as did Pat.

01:38:23
After signing up, an invite email will be sent. Also check your Clutter after signing up.

01:38:48
Love it!!!

01:39:08

My audio is dying out.

01:40:22
Thanks everyone for positivity and open hearts

01:40:54
I will survive, la la

01:41:31
Mark, the Zoom audio was an issue on the video,

01:41:42
“As long as I know how to Zoom, I know I’ll be all right”

01:41:43
Great way to end the call Jeff! :)

01:41:58
Thank you.

01:42:01
Thanks, all. Back to correcting papers.

01:42:01
Thank you so much!
