We made significant gains in the last few years when it comes to distance education.
Andrea Thorson
27:08
Shannon, thank you for your work!
NickyD
29:43
We will be "working remotely to serve our students at a distance."

Andrea Thorson
34:30
Thank you for sharing this, Nick!
Sarah O'Leary
34:45
Where are we posting that these chats are being held? and/or How are students learning about their resource changes?
Sarah O'Leary
35:03
Only on the Covid19 webpage?
Lesley Bonds
35:17
@Sarah check the website under "Communication" where you can find all of these recordings and faqs.
Lesley Bonds
35:38
The prez is promoting them in her Renegade Roundup and Samantha Pulido forwards to students
Lesley Bonds
35:53
We are posting heavily on social media (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram primarily)
Lesley Bonds
36:15
And have asked faculty to continue to carry to information forward to their students as they have the most direct line of communication
Danyel
36:25
From Sondra also

All of this info is available on the Library webpage, where we have all the links, plus a LibGuide link at the top for info related to using library resources online.
Danyel
36:42
lol I got you Sondra ;)
NickyD
37:18
@Sarah OL --> you can post the communication to your facebook and BCOSL facebook as well to communicate with other students.
Lesley Bonds
37:33
@Sondra, thank you - the COVID website is a starting point but now that this has saturated all campus operations, you'll begin to see each departments website being updated... constantly...!
Sarah O'Leary
37:40
Awesome. Didn't see it on social media and wanted to make sure someone was.
NickyD
38:56
yeah i'm trying, but you can do it as well. help me out. :)
NickyD
39:13
you have more friends than i do. lol
Sarah O'Leary
39:33
Is the process to make sure confer zoom is stablized with the heavy load still happening or has it been "fixed"?
Lesley Bonds
40:17
@Sarah, I have been using almost all day everyday and have had no issues this week
Halle Young
40:37
My chemistry professor is not acknowledging the fact that the campus is moving towards online and is still requiring us to go to class. However, I am very uncomfortable going to school. When will all classes (including labs) definitely be online? Have the professors been asked to communicate with their students?
Michelle Pena @ Bakersfield College
40:51
I haven't had any issues either with Zoom.
Kathryn
40:59
Would remote labs apply to the industrial tech/electronics program as well? Some instructors for that program are still wanting to hold class?
NickyD
41:42
@Halle Young i emailed you yesterday with information. stay in contact with you faculty. i have notified the dept. they are working on making this happen.
Lesley Bonds
41:51
@Halle, some science/performance arts/welding/etc faculty are in the later waves to move online because those courses are much more difficult to recreate virtually. They are all working very hard to prepare for this transition and are in communication with students
Lesley Bonds
42:25
@Kathryn, yes, much of what Professor Strobel is describing are strategies other departments are learning as they make the transition
Ruthie Welborn
42:30
Zoom has already disabled dialing in from phone when I created my account today. Have to use computer audio if I want the free zoom.
Cara Warwick
42:53
I had scheduled a f2f library research tutorial during our regular class hours in the next couple weeks. How can i arrange to have this happen over conferzoom?
Pamela Rivers
42:55
@Ruthie, make sure you sign up with ConferZoom, not Zoom.
Cara Warwick
43:09
can we make it at the same date and time so my syllabus is still accurate?
Michelle Pena @ Bakersfield College
43:17
The volume is very low and hard to hear.
John Chicca
43:22
Can't hear her
NickyD
43:38
@John, it is soft, please turn up your volume.
Sondra Keckley
43:54
@cara Warwick--email Kirk, and actually he will likely be emailing you to see how you would like to accommodate it.
Lesley Bonds
43:57
@Cara, if there are synchronous meetings (meaning all students and faculty meeting together at the same time) they must meet during the scheduled class time
NickyD
44:27
@Cara Warwick, connect with your faculty to make sure you know when and where your class is meeting. we are all figuring this out together
Cara Warwick
44:28
okay thanks Sondra
Sondra Keckley
44:47
Cara--yes, it can be same time and day!
Ruthie Welborn
44:50
Thank you Pamela!!
Danyel
45:26
@ruthie welcome to BC fellow Taftian lol
Ruthie Welborn
45:40
Thank you Danyel!!
Victor Diaz
45:55
Great ideal on the Chat Box for students
Victor Diaz
47:00
*idea
Kim Arbolante
47:18
@jennifer does that mean they will be paid FWS even if I have to send my student workers home?
Andrea Thorson
48:02
Thank you for making sure the students still get their hours. 👏👏👏
Victor Diaz
48:07
So important to so many of our students..."provision"
Ruthie Welborn
48:17
@Kim Arbolante, yes, at an average amount.
Kim Arbolante
48:29
@jennifer thank you for helping FWS students! I look forward to the info you said will be coming out later today :-)
Kim Arbolante
49:04
@ruthie thank you!
NickyD
49:17
In Student Life we are making a list of things we can have our students do virtually at home and still report back to us of their work. we do not have any FWS students.
Lesley Bonds
50:13
@NickyD, we are doing the same using categorical funds. If anyone needs help, @Isabel Castaneda has a master list for our students going that might give you some ideas
NickyD
50:17
there are a lot of "back burner" projects we have been wanting to do, so this is a great time to get them out and start working on them
Danyel
50:19
We have also asked our student workers to be creative and present us with ideas of things they can do at home as well
00289251
50:41
Thank you Jennifer! F/A is so important for our students..
Michelle Pena @ Bakersfield College
50:48
@Jennifer that is awesome. So glad to hear that financial aid is above the curve on this.
Lesley Bonds
50:50
@NickyD yes, and they will also need more reminders than ever about priority registration and other key dates than ever
Victor Diaz
52:00
Thank you Financial Aid Office!
nickstrobel
52:22
I’ve been using pre-recorded topical lecture videos instead of ConferZoom because the pre-recorded videos don’t require as high bandwidth.
Angie Horton
53:11
If you pre-record a lecture, what do you record it on and how do you get it to the students?
Kim Arbolante
53:44
@todd I think after all these Zoom meetings you're MCing you'll be ready to host the Oscars!
jason stratton
53:48
Great idea Nick- I have encouraged the use of pre-recorded, but hosted via youtube private channel. I hadn't thought of bandwidth- great point!
nickstrobel
54:03
@AngieHorton: I create using iMovie on my Mac laptop and then post to YouTube. Put links to YouTube vids in class CAnvas
Jeff Newby, historian extraordinaire
54:11
@Angie, do you have access to the email Charles Kim sent out yesterday? He has some extremely helpful links in there that I used this evening for the first time.
Sarah O'Leary
54:19
Some are using a youtube channel to post or you can post it within canvas under the "pages" section since canvas is limited in data.
Danyel
54:30
With KC now being in a state of emergency what is the likelihood of us doing a full closure. Also, if we do a full campus closure, does that mean that all employees will not be allowed to work on campus? Just trying to answer some questions that others have as well
jason stratton
54:38
what is the meaning of life? just throwing that out there.
tplett
54:51
42 Jason
Chris Glaser
54:55
Pre-recorded video is an awesome idea! PCs and Macs have built-in software that can do this pretty easy with a video camera. Also, our cell phones are a great resource. :)
Andrew Haney
54:58
Is the campus going to be open to faculty so we can come into campus and do lab demo's for our students through a Web conference
Kim Arbolante
55:13
@jeffnewbyライティングセンターで会いたい
Angie Horton
55:22
Thank you all! I'll keep exploring options
Kathryn
55:29
When will this all be expected to be final? If a class is still set to meet tonight and students choose not to go how will that be handled? Will they not face any repercussions?
Beth-Anne Mulder
55:46
if we go to a full closure - does that mean we don't have access to our BC office?
Lesley Bonds
55:56
@Andrew, right now we do not anticipate a physical closure that would lock people off campus but instead planning to reduce the overall # of people on campus. So faculty should be able to access their lab spaces if needed *at this point*
Jeff Newby, historian extraordinaire
56:12
@kimarbolante はい行きましょう。いつですか?
John Chicca
57:03
Is it anticipated that we will return to normal class schedule after spring break like the rest of the school districts?
Lesley Bonds
57:13
So, in other words, it'd be smart to start filming your videos now :)
Cindy Collier
57:57
@john chic at this time we don’t know it really depends on how the situation evolves
Lesley Bonds
58:08
@John, it's a constantly developing situation - taking it day by day.
Danyel
58:19
Is there a point where we will not allow students to come to work? Especially wondering for those who are not FWS
nickstrobel
58:26
@JohnChicca: My guess is that the closure will go longer than after Spring Break. I would plan on it going longer than Spring Break
Kim Arbolante
58:29
@jeffnewby 社会的距離が終わった後、日本へのフィールドトリップが必要です
John Chicca
59:05
Thank you Everyone! I was having some wishful thinking.
Bakersfield College
59:07
Please be aware that in our current situation students are not required to attend class. If students choose not to attend then it is our responsibility to provide students with an alternative assignment.
00058707
59:32
Will high school seniors still get priority registration? Are we thinking of possible moving registration back?
jason stratton
59:46
@BC, are you referring to physical attendance on campus, or participation in online course alternatives?
LBF phone
01:01:34
people with risk factors have been told to stay home.
Jeff Newby, historian extraordinaire
01:01:39
@kimarbolante 分かりました。私が再び日本に行くとき、私は決して離れません
0070123
01:01:43
should student workers worry about loosing their job?
Lesley Bonds
01:02:23
@0070123, our director of financial aid presented today that Federal Work Study students will continue to receive a paycheck and non-work study students need to work with their supervisors for alternative assignments
NickyD
01:02:35
No student do not need to worry about loosing your positions, please work with your supervisor for details
Michelle Pena @ Bakersfield College
01:02:53
We are not making any adjustments at this time.
Danyel
01:02:57
had a hard time hearing her, wanted to clarify. Thank you Lesley :)
Michelle Pena @ Bakersfield College
01:03:04
We are business as planned.
Lesley Bonds
01:03:20
Our Kern Promise advisors met today to discuss how to do virtual registration assistance for our cohort
Sondra Keckley
01:03:58
How are dual enrollment classes taught by HS teachers affected?
NickyD
01:04:29
@Sondra, Watkins will be working with the faculty as well. He has a plan
00289251
01:05:02
We may not have the one day registration event like last year but the outreach department is planning on communicating to the students about priority registration.
Sondra Keckley
01:05:55
Thanks. That question just happened to pop in my head.
Lesley Bonds
01:06:13
The forum recordings and chat faqs also get posted to the website!
nickstrobel
01:06:15
Thanks!
